gib_robinson Posted March 28, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 28, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have several UVa filters from film days and I am going to need lens protection for the M9 work I'm doing now. Question is, will I notice the difference between a UVa filter and a clear-glass B+W 007? Thanks very much. --Gib
Advertisement Posted March 28, 2011 Posted March 28, 2011 Hi gib_robinson, Take a look here Leica UVa filters versus B+W 007. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted March 28, 2011 Share #2 Posted March 28, 2011 Depends how critical you are. The filters were made for different purposes -The UVa filters to block UV light - unnecessary on post-1950 Leica lenses except in extreme circumstances which shifted the use to general-purpose protection, the 007 filters were specifically made to protect your lenses - extra thin glass to minimize adverse effects - elaborate coating to minimize flare and reflections, and special toughened glass to protect the lens better. lars_bergquist Posted March 29, 2011 Share #3 Posted March 29, 2011 A good quality UVa filter does not degrade the image in any practically detectable way, from what you get with the bare lens. So you will not see any difference between the UVa and the 007 either. Use the filters you have. The old man from the Filter Age
jaapv Posted March 29, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 29, 2011 As I said, it depends on how critical you are. Quite apart from that, I damaged a lens with a broken UV filter- I prefer the tough glass of the 007 filter - but each to his own.
gib_robinson Posted March 29, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted March 29, 2011 Thank you both. Since the clear glass B+W filters are cheap enough (next to most of the Leica gear I own), I'm going to buy them. I have been reluctant to put any glass in front of the lenses, but I've heard of enough damaged lenses to step past my prejudice. The 007's gives me the most pristine way to do it. Would I notice the difference between a UVa and a 007, very unlikely. . . . For starters, I'm red/green color blind. --Gib
