I guess I can answer my own question regarding focus lock - maybe it is still too early in the morning for me. Obviously, the delete/focus button lets you lock on the fly without having to shut the camera off to retain MF setting, duh! Pretty convenient of course..... sorry I brought it up.

Furthermore the delete/focus button let you lock the MF in a way that touching the MF wheel has no effect whatsoever on focus distance (i suspect this is also the reason so many people reporting a no-focus-problem after updating). It's different from the "focus storage" when switching the camera on and off.

Good point Mike - and on further reflection I think your explanation is THE primary reason why the delete/focus setting was included. Otherwise, there isn't much of a distinction from on/off or just continuing to shoot once you've set focus point (i.e., other than preventing inadvertent movement of focus knob as you point out).

I'm running Snow Leopard on my iMac. After I download the firmware and click onto it, I get the message 'cant open as there is no available application to open it' Can anyone please advise me how I should proceed?

Thanks

Dunk: I had the same experience. The downloaded .upd file is the firmware upgrade. Copy it to the root directory of your card and follow the install instructions. Takes less than a minute to upgrade.

Someone mentioned in an earlier post that 'DNG only' is now an option. Not on my upgrade - or did I do something wrong?

cheers,

john

I loved the camera before. Now I don't know if there's a word better than love. I can see the ISO when I'm pressing the shutter. That alone is worth a lot. This update was obviously well planned and thought out.

Auto focus seems to be the same speed. But the manual focus is definitely fixed. I would congratulate them if the hadn't taken them so damn long.

"The quality goes in before the name goes on." Or, as I saw in a favorite movie, "After all, how few days go to make up a century." It seems all one has to do is have a number of things to pursue and enjoy, and just let changes happen in any one of those things in its own time. It's better that way - no worries, no frustration.

As someone who does not want to manual focus (I say this because I'd be unlikely to use it), but who values image quality, and if you didn't have either camera, which would you choose? For example, if you were expecting a newborn, would the X1 give you any cause for concern in being able to take the images you'd like to be able to take? I'm looking for balanced opinions, this is not an attack on any particular make or model. Although, many X100 images I see look a bit, well, washed out - not sure if it's processing. Also, it seems that all the initial run have a wonky OVF issue which requires the camera to be sent back to Fuji for repair (although some folk with it are clearly trying to ignore the issue). I'm not enormously impressed I have to say. As a benchmark, I've previously had a D700, 1D Mark III, and currently have a 5D Mark II with the 85L f/1.2. I prefer quality over convenience, but not to the detriment of 'speed' - i.e. being able to use something that functions in such a way as to enable me to be able to take images of things that may not be stationary.

After using the X1 for a year, my strong feeling is that I'm satisfied that the image quality probably can't get any better. As to performance, the short answer is that you have to learn the X1 on its own terms. I don't find it directly comparable to any other camera. Not to say it's slow, but since you are getting by far the best image quality per cubic centimeter of camera (i.e. a lot of image quality performance in a small package), you do have to compromise somewhere.
