The new firmware speeds up low light and low contrast AF, my X1 seems very quick at high contrast in good light, so i doubt they would speed up AF generally. There are changes to the ISO too, but cant remember what, and improvements to jpeg picture quality.

Manual focus gets a make over too making it more useable.

Roll on 29th.

But massively improved manual focus. It has been said here for months that great improvements in auto-focus were not possible for hardware reasons.

And, Leica tweeted that it would be here in March.

Good news.

The memorization of last settings for MF is useful, and the accurate distance scale is valuable for zone focus.

Hopefully it will put an end to all the threads blooming everywhere in this forum, though I seriously doubt it...likely we'll have a ton of threads saying leica did this or that wrong, there's no end to this it seems..

I must say i like the new features but i liked the camera without the 2.0 firmware as well. The AF was always speedy enough for me since i never made pictures from moving objects, for me the best thing is probabaly the improved JPG quality, it was already good so i'm keen to see how it is now.

So what are we going to complain about from now then? Or does this mean we'd actually have to go out now and make pictures? :(

Theres always the lack of a built in viewfinder and the fact that the lens is "only" Æ’2.8 to complain about. They have come up before.....

Leica is horrible, apparently the new FW smears images??!!

The nex FW upgrade was tremendous, probably why they are flocking to the x100 instead.

The nex is better than X1, the fuji is better than X1, now what??

Barjohn, go shoot some photos with the X100 for all of us to ogle and leave us poor X1 owners to wallow in self-pity at having bought a piece of crap that cannot AF and cannot take photos either. That'll be a more effective way to bring your point across.

The X1 has never had problems in normal to bright light, it is only in dim light that the AF slows down.

I never use zone focus but if the distance scale gets bigger and more detailed I might try my hand at it.

What one can hear from Reid Revies the MF distance scale indeed gets bigger. MF is now always in full open aperture which increases accuracy. The distance scale also gets a green DOF marker according to the actual aperture. MF wheel now is speed sensitive (bigger focus steps when moving the wheel quick, smaller ones when moving slowly)

MF can be locked to protect changing focus by accidentally moving the focus wheel. MF also keeps distance when switching the camera off and on again. And you can AF on an object and then switch to MF. It will keep the focus point.

More over there is a one-minute power-off function now and the already reported speed enhancement in low light AF.

Sean Reid has posted a review of the long-awaited firmware upgrade on his site (http://www.reidreviews.com/flash.asp). His comments are based on the last beta version. To access his article, you must be a member and pay, so I will honor his intellectual property and just mention his findings in the broadest of terms. Apparently, the upgrade will be available in a few days.

All in all, it will be a significant improvement, particularly for those who use manual and zone focusing. There are limits, due to the sensor, to the speed of auto-focusing, so the improvements are incremental. The big improvements are with manual focusing. Sean did not mention anything about an option to select DNG only files.

The X1 remembers manual focus settings if turned off. If auto focus sets the distance and we switch to manual focus, the initial distance is what was set by auto focus. Also, a green depth-of-field bar is shown, similar to that in the DLux4. And, manual focus is done wide open (at 2.8), regardless of the aperture setting. The American Standard distance scale is now visible: 1, 1.5, 3, 4, 6, 10 feet and infinity.

Auto focus speed improved slightly - now on par with the Ricoh GXR-A12, but slower than the Panasonic GF-1.

One minute 'power off' is now an option. And when 'auto ISO' is selected, the actual ISO used is shown.

Sean characterized the improvements as 'notable' and of particular value to serious photographers who use manual focus.

Cheers,

john
