Nothing wrong with off the topic........ well film is pertinent to leica discussions an many buy a leica for the "leica look" and that stems from the tradition of how a leica lens renders film. Remember the so called leica look that is so important came before digital..............

I agree, nothing wrong with off topic as long as the thread seems to stick at least loosley to the original subject.

But this thread entitled "My Experience with X1 Firmware 2.0" now has nothing to do with Firmware 2 since the OP had a look at a pre production release that hasnt yet been announced.

There are valuable discussions on here that will be unread by most people because they are hidden in this thread without their own titles.

I'm not knocking anyone for their contributions here, most of them make interesting, if sometimes frustrating reading, my point is that there are better places to discuss some of these items so that they can be read and contributed to by a far greater number of people, maybe growing the X1 discussion threads.

Or we could amend the name to "My Experience with X1 Firmware 2.0 and general X1 issues" but that seems to go against the point of having a specific X1 forum.

Dont get me wrong, I enjoy reading this thread, most of the time, but I worry that its becoming purely a general discussion thread when there are better places to post .

( sits back and wait for the torrent of abuse.........)

I don't know. What if this rolling thread is the only thing salvageable on some fractured hard drive discovered by archaeologists or anthropologists hundreds of years from now? These ramblings might end up on the shelves next to Beowulf.

Besides, if we ramble too far off topic, we might even find the cure for cancer!

X1 became generally available 14 months ago. This thead started three months ago. It's little wonder the thread meanders so much. Leica seem incapable of moving as fast as a dead slug, unlike some other manufacturers with their firmware updates.

I agree that they are being incredibly slow with it, but most rushed firmware with multiple updates is to fix huge problems that are causing cameras not to focus at all or to randomly erase their memory cards -- things like that.

While it would be nice if there was a faster auto focus, a hyperfocal mode, and that the auto aperture wouldn't click around like crazy in sunlight, the X1 hasn't needed an emergency update.

What intrigues me is that in one issue of LFI magazine last year, a Leica employee (perhaps an engineer) clearly mentions in a interview that it was not possible to improve further the AF speed via firmware because the sensor was not designed for contrast detection AF, but for phase detection only. So it was a hardware related issue, not a software one. In the case of the FW update rumors becoming true, it seems that Leica didn't know what they were talking about at that time. Perhaps the X1 was released to the public while still in beta phase.

This can't be right. First, the X1 is contrast detection. Second, DSLR's use the same sensor with phase detection, so it's not the sensor.

Imagine the X1 with DSLR speed. Wow.

No they didn't. It was 'member experts' who pontificated that.

This is the problem with playing 'telephone' :)

There are other cameras that use a derivative of the same sensor which are faster. We'll see a speed increase I believe.

This is nonsense. from my experience Olympus (not the most 'together' company), reacted twice to complaints about focussing issues within 7 or 8 months, the second one making reasonable improvements, and threw in a few firmware 'goodies' while they were at it. Sony with the Nex updated firmware within 6 months to make manual focussing more palateable, add programmable buttons and update aspects of menu accessability. Leica - nada, typical arrogance.

Some users might disagree with this.

  • 3 weeks later...

In response to my inquiry to the firmware release on March 13th.

Unfortunately we don't get advance word from the factory on release dates for upgrades. Now is about the time we would expect to see an announcement for new X1 firmware. Of course any delay indicates that the factory either is not completely satisfied or has decided to add more changes.
