Not trying to be rude, more like trying to be a smartass.

I really was talking about the first dude, sean or whomever, then confused the blogger.

But the super-blogger guy fits the bill too.

SO and SO said it so it MUST be true.... ooooooooo.:D

You guys take this whole" Leica lifestyle" way to serious. ;)

You mean Sean Reid? There are some well-respected people in this scene, Sean Reid being one, and while it is perfectly OK if you don’t know these guys, you make it sound like ignorance was a virtue.

not a hater, not in the least. but an objective read of the x1 posts tells me that x1 owners are essentially people like everyone else and many will not be satisfied and the resulting threads will make for a good read. my main point is to leica and not the people posting -- if they want to be in the game of serving the marketplace that buys an x1 or an x100 or whatever is coming next, they need to be putting out a new camera sooner rather than later and not believe that a software upgrade alone will keep their products relevant in this market niche.

"People like everyone else" don't buy $2000 compact cameras. That said, if I were a stranger to Leica, I would find all of this partly entertaining and partly confusing. But knowing what a Leica is, all I can say is that my $2000 compact camera is going to be even better in a couple days. Yowzuh!

people are people regardless of what funds they have available to buy a camera. read through the d-lux4 (which i own plus an m9 and very much enjoy both) the dlux5 the x1 the m9 the s2 and all the other posts and you will see we are all human. the bank account doesn't change our expectations of what we want from what we buy regardless of the price.

i sincerely hope the software upgrade meets your and everyone's expectations. i also sincerely hope that leica stays in business, and it obviously views the x1 market niche as an important part of its strategy to survive. btw, if you think i am wrong about the need to bring out a newer version sooner rather than later in order to hold and grow this important segment of the camera market read the interminable thread on the x100.

jsrockit -- i suspect leica sells more during the fourth quarter. in fact, it would interesting to know that. the camera stores in nyc, including the leica counters, are generally a bit busier around holidays. by saying one gifts oneself is simply an expression ....

As we all ponder why Leica didn't have the foresight to bring out the X1 back in 1936 I think it's worth remembering that before the X1 this market segment did not exist...Sony benefited from Leica's free market research when they decided to release the Nex...not to mention Fuji's X100...which has wisely tapped into the retro craze the X1 has hinted at all along.

"People are people"? What does that mean? Leica is a very exclusive brand, from the X1 to the M's to the S2. Ordinary people do not buy Leicas, unless you're thinking of the Panasonic Leicas that cost a *fraction* of what the aforementioned cost.

There are many confusing aspects to your post, besides non-statements like people are people. For example, Leica introduced industry-leading cameras in not one, but three separate categories, a year and a half ago. So far there has not been a serious challenger to any of these from all of the world's camera makers, unless you count the X100, which isn't totally competitive with the X1 because of the large size.

So with world-leading cameras like these, what would it mean "Hope they stay in business"? Do you mean "For another 100 years"? I suspect they will do very well in the next 100 years.

I totally disagree. Leica is not a mass-market consumer brand, they absolutely do NOT have to put out a new camera every Summer.

I, and I'm sure many other X1 owners, would prefer they focus (pun unintended:D) on improving the quality and experience of their existing cameras, and protect our investment rather than producing an X2 with incremental upgrades on usability alone, which will serve little good other than possibly attracting some fickle minded camera hoppers.

If I was Leica, I'd be targeting an X2 only once there's substantial image quality improvements possible in this form-factor, and then wrap usability & design improvements around that, rather than the other way around; in my view, thats not for another year or two.

I doubt it will be out till at least 0900 UTC. The firmware update publishing guy will have to get to work and park his new BMW carefully, make a coffee, wake up his Mac, check his emails then press the button that puts the firmware up on the website.

Maybe 0930........

Is the MF any better? My focus wheel doesnt seem to work now......

I'll have to have a proper play later, time for work.

EDIT.. Ah, its ok now. Just had to autofocus then back to mf and it worked. AF seems a bit speedier and MF works a lot better.

Now to take some pictures.....
