X1 Firmware v2 Upgrade [Merged thread]

Personally, I've tried to create a few helpful threads. I posted DIY write-ups for both macro and teleconverters as well as an intro to lightwriting. Unfortunately, nobody seemed to want to innovate and contribute any of their own experiences and photos when attempting those type of things.

In fact, the last helpful things I remember reading was months ago when someone pointed out that setting your JPG size to small didn't effect your RAW photos, but it saved disk space (although I've fallen in love with the B&W high-contrast film setting, so I've been using the JPGs straight out of the camera for that lately).

It seems this forum only gets three types of posts:

1) ZOMG! I just got an X1, it's the best EVAR!!!

2) ZOMG! What bags and grips and viewfinders and straps and cases should I buy because I NEED to accessorize to take good photos because this camera just doesn't work without accessories that look REALLY good.

3) ZOMG! X1 sucks!

Nobody seems to experiment. Nobody seems to push their limitations or share their discoveries. There's just a lot of consumerism and complaining going on.

It is not about offending it is just stating what the camera does in that given situation and the image IQ results are mediocre. I never stated anything about the photos in terms of how you shot them so there was no criticism in that aspect ...... latest are hardly dim light action shots

stnami, I was under the impression slide film was 6-7 stops of dynamic range - no?

I was also under the impression that even modern aspc had surprassed film in dynamic range for the most part, let alone 'full frame'

I'm not supposing there aren't vast differences but afaik digital sensors are doing a better job than their film counterparts in dealing with highlight and shadow clipping, when exposed correctly for digital.

Of course this does not speak to preferences of rendering, only the technical capabilities to recreate a scene as witnessed by the human eye (14 stops of dr?) I'll have to look around more.. see what hard facts I can find.

Thoughts?

True, though there seem to be very few of those posts..

It's the same all over for the most part.. at least with technology. Computer forums = problems, next model, competing model, complaining.

:)

BTW Je - I do appreciate the threads you've started to help others, and bring more to the table.

Slide film (though becoming as rare as hen's teeth) still surpasses digi in shadow noise and rendition, it is a lot more forgiving and subtle.

Since the advent of HDR, camera manufacturers seem to have hopped on the band wagon to eliminate shadows altogether and turn night into the midday sun look. Tonal contrast is an important element in image making it helps in creating mood and atmosphere . Mr Texas would have been better of having greater areas of shadow in the images as it would have resulted in greater emphasis of the individuals and their expressions. Sure there would be a loss of detail in some areas but that only adds to the nuances of crowd scenes

Ed people don't use slide film because it is expensive, takes a long time to process and nobody makes slide projectors of excellence these days.

The slide is a projected light image

The digital screen is back lit

The printed image (chemical or digi) rely on textural differences, tonal contrast B>W and subtleties in colour hues

All different beasts and results........ we can add the scanned neg......

I use slide film, so to say that nobody shoots it is clearly wrong. It takes about 2 days to process from putting it in the post box, to receiving it through your door. It used to take an hour and a half, and still does if you process it yourself.

I shoot with it because it's much easier to scan than C41 colour film.

You can't get out of it that easily. That's 3 reasons you have given why people don't use slide film. But they do.

I haven't used a projector since I was a teenager, but I have never shot as much slide film as I do today.

Interesting all, thanks.

I do think that sometimes too much emphasis is put on lightening shadows.. but then I usually err on the side of underexposing to protect highlights, in my typically bright environment. One would be hard pushed without HDR (film or digital) to retain the detail seen in harsh light here.. though I acknowledge I should be finding better times to shoot, thought that's not always possible.

Admittedly, I've not shot film, which is of great interest to me. I've thought about getting an inexpensive film camera and working with it, as I think generally speaking it would bring me some greater understanding of photography in general.. as well as providing a different look to digital.

So all, any recommendations on an inexpensive film camera for a newcomer to film? I know there's one shop here that does development including scans.. however they are very expensive as I recall, compared to mail in offerings. Any hints on where to go for such work?

I was just reading about the new portra 160 as well - redesigning film for scanning.. I wonder how much truth there is to that, and how much is marketing to keep film going. Obviously I'm not equipped to opine on that matter.

Edward, as a kid, I learned to shoot with my parents' Canon AE-1. When I was about 14 they gave me my own used AE-1 Program. That old AE-1 Program survived my college years as well as four years afterward being drug all over Houston when I was a reporter. They're not the fanciest cameras out there, but you can pick one up for about $30 and they last forever.

I had a dark room for a while, but I've always had pets and somehow no matter how careful I was, I would always end up with lint and hair all over my negatives before they finished drying. I started just using color film and taking it to the drug store for one hour developing, then using the color negatives to make black and white enlargements at home of any prints that I happened to like.

While it was a fun experiment and learning process, the whole thing was just too tedious and time consuming for me. I haven't shot film in forever, but on the few occasions I do, I just have Walgreens make a photo DVD and then work from the electronic files.

Yet, that is the point of the X1 forum ... to discuss how we're using the X1 and how to get better results with the X1, not what other cameras would be better for every situation where the X1 was used.

It seems to me that when a genuine question is posted by an X1 user asking for help and advice, very few people bother to answer, which is probably because there aren't too many people on the forum that actually own an X1

Perhaps this thread should be closed till Leica actually released the new firmware, it's so off topic now anyway

Nothing wrong with off the topic........ well film is pertinent to leica discussions an many buy a leica for the "leica look" and that stems from the tradition of how a leica lens renders film. Remember the so called leica look that is so important came before digital..............

I don't think there's any real issue that this has turned into a sort of rolling thread. It would be silly to close it just to open non specific other threads in the x1 forum to talk about the same things :)

As far as people answering questions.. we try. There are some questions (technically) like the recent lightroom one - I personally don't know as I never use that feature when using contrast detect af, it just doesn't matter to me.

Other questions many times deal with camera issues and are answered in one post.

No it's not .....................if you read stuff probably there are people who would buy one despite its shortcomings ........ when they come on the second hand market at a reasonable price to me I am willing to get one, never stated I wouldn't .......... I just don't buy new cameras

Here here !

It's just a let's bash the X1 thread now

I think you meant 'hear hear'.

There's a lot of stuff going on in here.. some is frustration, some is 'off topic' from x1 conversations.. some is x1 defense.

It doesn't all have to be wine and roses; it rarely is when beneficial.
