Clifton D-LUX 5 Posted March 27, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 27, 2011 Dave, Between the masterful train layout and the great photography, Its hard to tell that isn't a real life scene. Paul I second that! Did you capture the pictures in Raw and convert to B/W? Model trains are also a hobby of mine within N and Z scales. Was this show in Springfield Mass? euston Posted March 27, 2011 Share #5 Posted March 27, 2011 Paul’s right. Amazingly real looking. Very nicely done!
daveleo Posted March 27, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted March 27, 2011 Thanks for the comments. I am working on 2 or 3 others that I'll post if the come out realistic. These were just color JPG's and I even had the LX3 set to "automatic ISO", as I was there to have fun ! . . . Converted them to B&W via The Gimp in PP. Will comment more later when I post a few more. Clifton Dlux-5 : if you are into model trains, you obviously have way way too much money
stuny Posted March 27, 2011 Share #7 Posted March 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dave - A wonderful set, and #1 is excellent. As I mentioned in one of Clifton's threads, I hope you've seen the film The Station Agent, and if not I encourage you to rent it.
daveleo Posted March 27, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted March 27, 2011 Here are a few more. I worked to get the images looking realistic, as these guys make fabulous train sets. The lighting is utterly horrid for nice photographs. The show is noted here: Greenberg's Train & Toy Show | Home . I went to the Wilmington, MA show yesterday. I just like seeing these sets. This is a very expensive hobby ! One locomotive alone is maybe $200 - $500 ! Stuart: yes I have seen The Station Agent (Patricia Clarkson is a heart throb of mine ). Okay . . . enough chatter, here they are . . . (note that I took a second swing at the last one) . .
Clifton D-LUX 5 Posted March 27, 2011 Share #9 Posted March 27, 2011 Beautiful work! I enjoyed how you captured the men at work! The realism of your photos is outstanding! In answer to your question, my progress with the trains is equal to that of a snail. I purchase an item here and there and that is how I justify the unrealistic costs. likalar Posted March 27, 2011 Share #10 Posted March 27, 2011 Really nicely done, Dave! Great train layouts to start with, but what makes the photos so nice is the extended dof. Often that is missing, and the photos look like, well, toys.Nice that you're able to get the camera in close, too. Are these HO (if it's still called that)? daveleo Posted March 28, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted March 28, 2011 Thanks again for the comments. The work put into these train sets is inspiring. I wish they would kick the spectators out and give "photgraphers only" an hour to snap away. A few months back I did have such an opportunity and posted some pictures on my personal site. These were shot with Nikon gear, so be advised (per the forum rules): RogersTrains @Larry: There were all kings of track gages at this show. Also . . . I find the little LX3 sensor has loads of DOF. In fact in the workman photo (next to last) I actually blurred the background in PP ! to give it a slighlty 3D look. These were all shot af f4.
