patrick parker Posted March 24, 2011 Share #1  Posted March 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) It won’t come as surprise but I don’t like Leica X1. I especially do not like the people who defend it 100%. On the other hand I like Leica. I wish them success. In fact the reason I don’t like the X1 is because I like Leica. They saw a future for fast compact high quality cameras and made an amazing contrubition to history’s visual archives. Who ever is in the market today still owes leica a gratitude.  There are many Leica made cameras I disagreed with in the past like the R8,M6 TTL, M7,R9, MP and the M8. R8 was bulky so was the R9. M7 had electronic shutter and this made it fragile. MP’s rewind crank was a step backwards in mechanics. M6 TTL turned the shutter dial backwards. M8 had horrible parallax for street photography. None of these disagreements kept me from buying them. As I said I like Leica. My disagrement meant nothing, what I did not appreciate where not faults but Leicas choices. What I did not like only affected my using of the camera it made things unpractical for me personally.  Who knows what goes on in those meeting rooms? There are so many factors at play that I can not think of , I’m aware of this. A small company in this day and age surviving and even recently making profit is something to be marveled at. I’m sure they can tell a hundred different reasons to why those cameras had to be the way they were. X1 is not one of those cameras. But I think we talked enough about that already in previous posts.  On the L-Camera forum I bitch, raise questions, make fun of other members, give useful information, ask questions etc. etc. The ones I contibute to are always the technical ones specific about certain cameras, mainly the M8, M9 and X1. There are two very strange thing going on at these forums one of them is people in all their seriousness say complaining about the shortcomings of X1 will not make me a better photographer this and that will. This happens at a forum about a certain camera. The other strange thing is the loyalty issue, people love their cameras I mean really love them like their children. They refuse to hear anything bad about them, they even get aggressive at times. I own an X1 , It produces images better than it’s competitors because It’s a Leica, it would be a real disaster if it didn’t. If we accept it the way it is with all it’s faults we would be causing generations of damage. Leica deserves more.  Thank you for taking the time to read this. stunsworth Posted March 24, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted March 24, 2011 How did the M7 electronic shutter make it fragile? Does it have a high failure rate? Â Leica are obviously making lots of mistakes, why else would they currently be making a profit?
Ecaton Posted March 24, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted March 24, 2011 Can I have an executive summary? Â My take from the long post: X1 owners should start behaving like customers rather than fans, i.e. be more rational, demanding and critical. Â However, the X1 is soooo cute. And as Konrad Lorenz figured out many decades ago infantile features trigger nurturing responses in adults. That's why so many come to cute's X1 defense when some dare criticizing its obvious shortcomings. Cuteness is a powerful marketing tool:eek:

Not only to being dropped or bumped also weather conditions. M6 is still one of the best cameras for extreme cold settings.

JeTexas Posted March 24, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted March 24, 2011 The X1 does make the cute girl at the camera shop's panties wet if I carry it in there. Then when I showed her I built my own teleconverter, well ... Â Too bad she's married ... and 63. Â What are we talking about?
andybarton Posted March 24, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted March 24, 2011 So, basically you "disagree" with every single camera Leica have made since about 1976. Is that right?
patrick parker Posted March 24, 2011 Author Share #11 Â Posted March 24, 2011 Only parts of it. I also said that I bought them an I added that it did not matter if some customers disagreed because they made a choice according to reasons beyond my use of the camera. M8 for example is excellent for closer distances because of a different viewfinder. but i don't work much in such close distances, that makes it a better camera for someone else. Then I added X1's case was different, that it... oh screw this, what kind of a moderator are you? Go back and read it again.

earleygallery Posted March 24, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted March 24, 2011 So you're saying Leica make bad cameras, but you still buy them because they're the best cameras, but you don't really like them....... Â Still not sure what your actual point is old chap, but no one is forcing you to buy a Leica, there are plenty of other cameras out there which might suit your purposes better. I use Leica along with others, I like them all for different reasons and choose the most appropriate for a given purpose, or just what I fancy using at the time. pop Posted March 24, 2011 Share #19 Â Posted March 24, 2011 As far as I can make out you appear to dislike the X1 because it makes better images than competing products. Also, the M8 has too much parallax for your street photography as opposed to all other M cameras (with the exception of the MDx and M1) which have exactly the same parallax. What matters is X1 should be noticed as a camera that looks like a leica but carries none of the genes. because it doesn't function like one.  what I said wasn't really about cameras, it was about forum members behaving as  irresponsible consumers.
