Philipp, I get the feeling

I'm not responsible for your feelings.

We keep reading arguments for the forum's restrictions on linking to external images being counter-productive, and those reasons are all quite lame.

A few members had specifically asked that ' zenfolio ' be treated in the same way as ' Flickr '.

According to instructions I read, I sent Andreas a pm requesting the same.

I also pointed out to him that I get the ' Zenfolio' banner on this site when I visit.

But neither did I receive an acknowledgement from Andreas or his staff members.

In other forums, the forum owners do respond to their members's pm ( at least the other forums I participate in.)

The views expressed by some other forum members here about a stifling culture is what I feel when I visit here. I realize it is a privilege granted me.

But that is no different than me being a guest on the other forums

p.s a post in this thread refers to ' white' list. Maybe the poster meant a list of sites approved by th management from where images could be directly downloaded.

I certainly hope so.

Yes I know, I have a choice, if I do not like the way this forum is operated..

Best regards.

I presume that I am "staff". I have never received any request re any other outside providers. If I did, I would have to refer them to Andreas.

Don't forget, Andreas's PM is " admin", not "Andreas".

Andy, thanks for the response.

It is my bad. I addressed the pm to admin. My apologies to Andreas.

I have not checked the ' white ' list but is Zenfolio on it?

If not could it become ' white '. Since it would seem inappropriate for a ' non-white ' site to be included in ads/banners.

Best regards.

Pico, the desribed issue in the report above is entirely disconnected from the actual direct link to an image like "www_123sample.com/images/123sample.jpg"

Perhaps your objection could be overcome if I posted an image link to a site I owned with an .httpaccess that totally screwed you up.

But I will not. Someone else, in fact thousands of perps to that. It is the responsibility of the owner/admin of this site to filture such. I'm retiring. Y'all can figure it out on your own.

My understanding was that images had now to be uploaded to the forum, as per this message:

Until now also external images could be linked into the forum from all sources: Flickr, hosting services or private homepages.

This will be forbidden and technically restricted (by deactivating the IMG tag). If you want to show your images in the forum in the future you have to upload them to the forum.

Now I see that this instruction has been changed to allow the linking of images from a very limited number of hosting sites, as per this message posted a little later:

By a technical extension today we have set effective the limitation regarding the inclusion of external images via the IMG tags.

External images included by the IMG tag now will show up only as link, except they come from these domains we trust:

- Flickr

- fotocommunity (German community)

- Apple's me.com

- Google Picasa

- Leica Camera Websites

- Leica Forum Album images

- SmugMug

It is potentially confusing to have these contradictory instructions in two different threads. May I suggest that they be replaced by a single authoritative account of how photos may be posted.

Back in April several members suggested that Zenfolio be added to the permitted list. Did it happen?

I posted above that I have asked Andreas to consider Zenfolio and when I get home from work I will edit the two statements ih the "About the Forum Section".

I think, though, that reading the two threads, it's quite clear that there is a "white list" of acceptable 3rd party hosting sites.

I use pbase ,which is not currently on that list. However absolutely no problems here. Andreas provides a free service for us all. I am very happy to post directly and within the reasonable (free) forum rules. If I want to share images outside those limits it is easy to just include a link instead of directly including the file from elsewhere.

I think it is unreasonable to complain about fitting within the framework that Andreas provides; people can easily and cheaply be a supporting member if wanted.

The Admin could be more strict than he has been and require that all images first be put to the server(s) supporting this site. Chasing malware is a full-time job. You rarely know in a timely manner when a trusted site has been hacked. Malware does not exist inside the image - your request to display an image from a site is modified to redirect you to other sites which could display the image, other images, scareware, anti-Leica sites, in fact anything they wish to do. It is done at the server from which the image is requested. Our Admin has to watch one configuration file in particular on his servers to obviate that from occurring here, and that check can be protected and automated, but he has no access to the malware distribution configuration site.
