Wouldn't it be wonderful if Leica apologized?

... buy the X1 with the vision of 2.0 in our minds?.

Woot? 2.0? You crazy, man? How can we possibly even consider using that brick before the release of Version 3.2 of that software? Everyone knows that .0 versions are inherently unstable and any version before 3.0 premature.

I don't post much, but I lurk here everyday, sadly I must say the x1 forum is the worst forum I visit on the Internet. Junk.

Like the camera, it could be better in several ways. Maybe in 50 ways. But it's still rather unique, and fairly exclusive. And anyone can get in if they're willing to skip a few meals to pay for the little beastie.

I do not have a problem with genuine criticism about the cameras issues but with the same repetitive anti Leica posts by the same boring forum members its no surprise we have members that would rather lurk than get involved in the forums posts.

Agreed.

Funny thing is my experience runs totally contrary to what many are saying, not that the camera is perfect.

And as for the specific forum member you spoke of well first it was nex vs X1, then fuji vs X1 who knows what next. Funny thing why isnt he just going to the fuji forum but instead choose to be here each and every opportunity taking jabs. Beats me what that serves to accomplish. MEanwhile his nex didnt do it for him and has been forgotten, and so will his fuji I'm sure. I saw many of his M8 shots and well lets just call them ordinary so as not to be mean. In fact, to be brutally honest I went thru his shots and there were no difference whatsoever whichever the camera he uses. Meanwhile he continues to this day (a year and a half or more later) to bash the X1 like a mortal enemy, for whatever reason no one knows??!!

Then there's the leica should do this/that, X1 owners should not like the camera just because the poster doesn't, leica should apologize,, what will leica do to survive, etc, etc, etc it's ridiculous.

The AF speed criticism has to be the worst, thousands of post saying the exact same thing. If it is not usable shouldnt the logical thing be to sell it? And for non-owners just avoid it like the pneumonic plague instead??!!

The X1 is what it is, the FW adds features but will not change the fundamental aspects of the camera plus its limitations. One either works around it or use another camera. I do not take product shots with the X1, nor shoot the F1 championships. In most cases I would say that the fixed focal length is its primary limitation, not AF. Gosh I can see how many more posts about how the FW was inadequate, etc,etc,etc.....

I would be absolutely pissed if leica issues a FW that crashes my camera and turns it into a brick, so I am glad they took their time.

Yeah, Leica cameras would be be great if it weren’t for those Leica engineers bodging it …

What makes you think it would be easy to modularize the firmware to the extent that the AF could be turned into a plug-in module – so some smart external developer could just plug in his or her own, improved AF module? A contrast-based AF is a real-time process that needs to be well-behaved amid other, concurrent processes. Often improvements in AF speed are due to a global change in priorities, i.e. the live view is slowed down temporarily to free up some CPU cycles for the autofocus. Also the autofocus needs to talk to other components such as the sensor and the focusing motor. It is hardly an ideal candidate to be encapsulated into an open source module so external developers could have a go at it.

And just how many people are there having the necessary expertise? How many people have actual experience in developing contrast-based AF algorithms (and aren’t already working for some other vendor), and what percentage of those have the intimate knowledge of the camera hardware necessary?

Honestly, nothing that can be said about the firmware. There is no way to know the design of their firmware. But the truth is that will live in a world populated with 6 billion people and you just might be surprised at what one of them might think up. Heck I'd be very happy if I could make two tiny tweeks. Get it maintain its manual focus setting after auto power off and change the number of knob turns between the manual focus stops.

scary

Oskar Barnack just spoke to me from beyond ... he said "Hey - it's my camera - y'all are just users. Now stop whining and go take some photos."
