phancj Posted March 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I will be taking a much deserved break after slogging for the longest time...I have been working in the States on and off many years this is the first time visiting again after a 3 year absence. I will be visiting with my wife and having not gone on a holiday with her for years I am psyched. Question: I will be in orlando for a week, and would like to locate a store that has the M9, the X1, and hopefully some nice lux lenses. I find it a great opportunity to buy leica stuff in the States since the M9 body sells for US$10,000 (I am not kidding), the X1 US$2,150 where I live. BTW I am very adverse to buying stuff online especially things of this price and would like to see the exact piece I am getting. Any recommendations? phancj Posted March 22, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted March 22, 2011 I would buy from Dale if given a choice since it is a forum sponsor (It's the right thing to do since I use this forum a lot) but 200 miles is an awfully long way and we wont be driving this trip... I will be staying near the Mall at Millenia since my wife will do some shopping there....any leads for leica shops near there? CJ
andybarton Posted March 22, 2011 Share #5 Posted March 22, 2011 Use the dealer finder on Leica's website. Don't forget, not every city has a dealer and in US terms, 200 miles isn't that far.
phancj Posted March 22, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted March 22, 2011 Agreed, but since I do not wish to drive on this trip but rather soak in the theme parks/shopping so 200 miles is IMO long... Will see how it goes, it's six weeks away so I wont lose sleep over it, and will play by ear when it comes. Meanwhile, any ideas will be most welcomed and appreciated. marknorton Posted March 22, 2011 Share #7 Posted March 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) You work hard for years and deny both you and your wife holidays and you then reward yourself with a trip to Florida theme parks and shopping malls? Without a car? Personally, I cannot imagine anything worse, but to each his own. Please don't forget to post pictures of the shopping malls you visit so that we can spot the differences. I hope you enjoy your trip! You can use the Leica Camera web-site to locate dealers "close" to where you are staying but even if there is even one, it's unlikely they will have the Aladdin's cave of Leica M gear you have set your heart on. Fast M lenses are in especially short supply.

Oh my wife and I do travel separately for work with occasional leisure....mostly within ASia last 3 years...and before that we used to go almost yearly to the States. There are some rides like harry potter and others which we havent seen. Thing about theme parks is we spend the whole day there same for malls. So why is it surprising we see no need to drive? BTW my wife is a shopaholic so she will be happy anywhere in the world with shopping centers which are different from what we have here. When traveling I prefer not to drive unless visiting multiple places per day otherwise better to sit back and enjoy the ride instead of looking at maps searching for places. WOrk trips are different. nippa Posted March 22, 2011 Share #9 Posted March 22, 2011 It's always surprising how the range of photographic equipment seems limited outside New York. Florida like most States is quite barren unless you're after Nikon or Canon but there is the Palm Beach Photographic Center . Clematis St , West Palm Beach. It's an easy drive from Orlando and has a large range of Leica equipment. I've bought several accessories in there and there are loads of books etc to make the trip worthwhile. I've never been to Dale in Hollywood although I was staying in the area just two weeks ago ; I must look them up next time. Enjoy your trip

Without a car? Personally, I cannot imagine anything worse, but to each his own. I'm afraid I'm a "Plus 1" on that. We went to Orlando when the children were young teenagers and it's not somewhere that I would return to. Soul-less and soul destroying. It's also the last place on earth I'd look for Leica kit - cheap Levis, yes, Summiluxes, no. The Gulf coast was an entirely different matter - I'd go back and stay on Anna Maria Island tomorrow. I assume that there are coaches from International Drive or other parts of town that go direct to the malls and theme parks, but when we were there, I'd have said that a car was pretty much essential - if just to get away from the place. Just to declare an important fact - I abhor theme park rides. You haven't said for how long you are going to be there, but have you considered some R& R shopping elsewhere? Like NY, for example? My advice would be to have a great holiday and then come home refreshed and then get down to your local dealer the following weekend
phancj Posted March 22, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted March 22, 2011 Andy, Maybe thats the difference between where we live. I have worked in South America,Thailand, USA and made numerous trips to Europe, States and most parts of Asia for work and pleasure. Seen lots of scenery, parks, etc, etc. Last few years we spent lots of time in India as well. Since the economic crisis, the company i work with has reduced its presence in the States hence the fact of me not going there for 3 years. Next month end we are most likely going to renovate our retail stores, and I see it as golden opportunity to go several places. Our trips (:)we will be going a few places some decided some not) will include India (my favorite) and the States. We may pop by a few more places but we'll see. Theme parks are a change for us and is refreshing since my wife and I both like rides, and havent been going for 3 years (except the tiny Universal studios here if that counts). I have set aside only a week including travel so effectively I have 6 days in Orlando. Half of that will be in the theme parks and the rest shopping and eating. Price difference of M9 here and in the states is US$3,000 it seems....I can sorta get a lens free! Cj

stuny Posted March 22, 2011 Share #16 Posted March 22, 2011 CJ - So if Hollywood, FL at 200 miles away is too far, I guess that stopping by to see me is out of the question? Have a wonderful vacation, and good luck with the Leica gear.

phancj Posted March 22, 2011 Author Share #18 Posted March 22, 2011 Stuart, Coming to see you would seem an excellent idea actually...only thing is my wife though supportive of all my camera purchases will be most unlikely to join me on that trip... Everything is still not finalized except for the fact that i will be in the States...maybe NY should be a stop... CJ

smkoush Posted March 22, 2011 Share #20 Posted March 22, 2011 I understand you don't want to drive, but if you rent a car for 1 day, you can visit the Kennedy Space Center, about 50 miles east (no Leica dealer there, but you can take cool pictures!). If you are space-inclined, it is certainly worth seeing! Plus if you are there April 19, or 13 days later you may be able to catch a glimpse of space shuttle Endeavor during launch (April 19), or coming back (13 days later). Savvas Welcome, dear visitor!
