Sell the m8.2 and get an MP?

Listen, I get this every few years, almost bought a M6.

To dull my cravings I bought a second hand canon a1, 50mm and 135mm lenses (a classic camera - all dslrs today are still fundamentaly based on the innovations of the A1) - mint quality! The a1 was £99 and the 135 was only £40.

After 6 rolls, albeit great fun, I am cured for another few years.

As:

1. Sorry film aficiendos, the quality is below digital !

2. Its hassle getting them developed and - have to wait 5 days (for boots near where I work)

3. Its very expensive

4. You have to wait for the end of the roll to see your pictures *

5. The pictures build up in boxes (which I don't have storage for), so the only practical way to see them, or show them off, is to scan them and store them on a computer.

6. Its all very smelly

* I think about each shot. Not seeing the results immediately is a real pain. Also I may only take a few pictures in a session. I don't want to wait until I want to take more pictures, and finish the roll.

I recommend you get a cheap film camera and play around before you splash on an mp.

My 2 cents

I had an MP together with my M8 .

On a holiday ( trip ) I was alway afraid to scratch my expensive MP. So I have traded it for an M9 and bought a Leica M6 TTL 0,85 . For me it's more fun. Having an M9 for my 50mm and a M6 0,85 . I print my films in the next holiday.:)

Forget the MP. An old M6 makes your pictures allso right and you don't have to use it so often because otherwise you bought a to expensive camera.

Sure, why not sell it? I sold mine last fall after comparing my M8 files to what I was getting on Ektar with my film M. Preferred the look of film, that pretty much sums it up. Bought a used Rollei TLR after I sold it.

I still use a Nikon F3 when I go on canoo trips. ( Better watermanagement!:)) But without kidding. When I look on ebay I see a lot of MP body's for sale. When I sold mine half a year ago it stayed on ebay for a few months! MP is no longer for taking pictures in my humble opinion because it's getting to expensive when you use it rarely.

You should not buy an MP for being afraid, to scratch it.

I really licked blood with the M8.2 I bought a bit over a year ago.

I just added a mint (read: scratch free) MP in black paint, as I looooove, how these cameras get more and more your personal camera through usage:

Apologies - it was not my intention to delete the original linked images [Andy Barton]

There is no M6, that ages as gracefully as the M8.2 or a black paint MP except the one (overpriced) special edition M6.

A mint MP like the one, I finally snatched goes for just a tiny bit more than the black paint M6 - a no brainer, to go after the MP, really.

If one really is full of money or determined, to buy THE camera for life, even a new from the factory MP is excusable - you do that only once and you won't get any younger - right?

If you are going to use the camera, get an MP - the M6 is about half the money, if you are not sure. A M6, that has been upgraded with the better MP finder specs is even more than half the cost of an MP, but still doesn't come with black paint ;-)

I had a chrome version, no " aging" on it there. The M6 TTL I now have is also chrome. And I also don't see the difference between the viewfinders. In fact I like this one better because of the 0,85 enlargement. They must have been made in the same year because my MP was on of the first to leave the factory and my M6 ttl was one of the last ( in fact 460/999 )

How did you wear down the " M8" in your wore down M8.2 camera? Was the white paint removed with intension?

Shortly after I bought the M8.2, I have removed the white filling with a plastic tool.

Half of a letter had been fallen off before.

This seems a common issue with Leica white paint fillings - only recently did I see, that my last year newly bought 35 Lux has missing part of the DOF marking, which I will not remove, as they are actually useful.

I absolutely would. I have the M9 and in the future hope to have the MP too, seems like a dream team..

I have to admit. I traded my MP + M8/50 cron, for a M9 with a mild exra payment. I will never regret the M9 but after a week longed for a " real " film camera.

The M9 gave me the feeling that I had a film camera in my hand, but to realise that I would never make a real negative and a real print on silver gelatine was to much for me. I develop my own negatives an stil print them myself. As a kind of meditation but also for the beautiful result and feeling.

In a week I called my " dealer" and he sent me a very nice new M6 "die Letzten" 460/999. For me this was enough. I think the " Die Letzten " on the camera was a sigh for me , never to buy anonther camera again, but you never know.

No I don't mis the MP. This one feels better!

But I can't imagine people how never have printed their own prints to use a film camera. What's the point? Buy two M9's

I'd certainly add a film M body to the M9. I have an M9 and two Zeiss Ikons (should I say Z cameras?) and still enjoy using the Ikons and the results from film. It looks different than digital, but that may or may not be worse depending on what you want. I enjoy shooting the film bodies and he process (when I have time, hence the M9) and the results.

I would only suggest that, unless you just want an MP for its own sake or can afford to lose the initial depreciation without concern, that you try something less expensive first. Then enjoy.

Have M9 and MP and wouldn't have it any other way, but it is not a primary/backup combo. They see about the same amount of use, because both have so many benefits over the other. By all means choose a MP but you might end up shooting more film than you intended. If you only need a backup for sporadic use then how about a little m4/3 body to use your M lenses on.

I think the main advantage of the combination M9/MP ( 0r M6 ) is that they feel the same.

Don't' use a 4/3;)

I have an M8, two M6, two M5, two barnacks.

Even though I make most on my images with my M8, the film bodies are really special even in these days of diminishing film and processing options.

For the price of a MP you could have a nice mini collection of two older bodies (M2, M4 / variants, M5 ) and a couple of lenses just for them.

-no offense to the MP crowd!

Diminishing film and processing options? The problems with these don't alter if you process and print yourself. Do it , it's fun and relaxed. I still can buy films and paper enough.

I agree with the self restraint. I'm an Englishman living abroad and every trip to London is preceded by well laid plans to buy an M3 and maybe an M4. And I pull myself together because I don't need more cameras and I know that buying another, even an M3, won't produce a single better picture.

Same thing goes for lenses.

The result is temporary distress and long term content.

I don't agree that digital saves you a dime. It's the most bloody expensive habit ever designed by manufacturers to sift money out of your pocket.

The belief that digital photography is "free" is a classic example of zero sum economics, like the idea that "wouldn't it be great if we all drove electric cars because it would get rid of pollution".

+1 on that for sure
