pico Posted March 19, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 19, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just sharing a very good gizmo - IMHO the best lightweight Monopod: the Gitzo GM1130MT Monotrek Hiking Stick. I was informed of this item through friends who require an everyday walking stick, as I sometimes require as well. It is very light, and adequate for Leica M work. The picture in the link above shows the cover over the ballhead lifted off. When in place, the end is smooth, hand-friendly, and the expanded thing at the bottom can be removed; I find it handy in our Minnesota winters. And the tip is hardened steel with expressions to hold on ice. Oh, what cannot be seen in the picture is that it collapses into itself. Nicoleica Posted March 20, 2011 Share #3 Posted March 20, 2011 I've been using one of these for several years. (I believe that mine may be a slightly earlier version though.) They are really excellent, and I keep mine in the boot of my car so that it is always handy when needed.
andybarton Posted March 20, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 20, 2011 I have used something much cheaper but somewhat less sophisticated from Leki for years. This one looks like a good one.

250swb Posted March 21, 2011 Share #6 Posted March 21, 2011 I've got one of these Trailwise Photo Pole T85P Trekking Pole I added a small ball head and its a very light setup. Its just that I've never used it with a Leica. The M is easy enough to hand hold down to 30th sec, and longer than that a monopod isn't going to help anyway, it will still sway around, so a tripod is still the only solution. Steve Hi Sit on closed foam mat, cross legged, ground monopod well in front, 45 degrees to vertical, pointing towards your head try x6 shots at 1/8 sec. If you dont have neural probs thay all may be sharp... Noel

Noel Ahh yes I now understand why my lightweight fuss free monopod doesn't seem to work, I keep forgetting to carry a foam mat with me (and as I need to sit cross legged I may as well take a picnic as well) Steve

pico Posted March 22, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted March 22, 2011 Sit on closed foam mat, cross legged If I were to do that, it would take me forever to get back up. Thanks to everyone for showing alternatives. Now I know I paid way too much for mine! And BTW - holding onto the top of a stick that's got an exposed tripod screw is unacceptable to me. I'd get a wooden ball and tap and drill for a 1/4" x 20 insert to screw over it. Or make it steel and use it for self defense. (Really, there are classes here for senior citizens in some kind of martial arts with canes and sticks. Odd, since anyone can carry a firearm. Oh, that's just too morose. Sorry.)
