March 18 and no firmware yet

Aparently, my car is supposed to do 66 mpg...

I know that this is frustrating for many people, but as I have said before (and I'm sure others have too), Leica will release any firmware update when it is ready and not before. No one will thank them for releasing it when it's unfinished, or if it doesn't fix the bugs it is intended to. Or worse, by fixing one thing it makes something else break.

..the photographer reacted in an instant, first he turned on his camera waited for autofocus to wake up, meanwhile the tiger was still sleeping..........

......Suddenly, the tiger awoke and instantly bounded toward him. In a live or die situation he desperately tried to take his ultimate picture. But wait....damn! it won't focus on the rapidly approaching tiger. Finally in sheer desperation he swung the camera around on the sturdy Artisan and Artist strap and struck a glancing blow to the side of the tiger's skull. The tiger retreated, injured.

Alas his X1 was dead, but at least the photographer was not.

Six weeks later it arrived back from Solms. Eagerly he ripped open the box and switched it on. Whats this? V2 firmware!! Thrilled he ran off in search of the tiger again only to find that the beast had sustained brain damage from that X1 blow, and was now timid. It seems that fateful blow had updated the tiger's firmware.

How was he now to test out the new X1 firmware?

Stay tuned........

There! see what this constant bickering has done to me.

That says that the photographer reacts in an instant - it doesn't say that the camera does. There is a subtle, but important, difference

Oh, I see. So Leica meant I can react in an instant, but the camera will not be ready?

gee andy,

that wasn't best way to defend leica, was it?

I'm not here to defend Leica. I will give them praise when it's due and if they have an ambiguous bit of marketing fluffery, I will comment on that too v

It's what it says... you can read onto it what you will, but there's no mention of the camera on the phrase.

Yes, I forgot... they were talking about people when they said auto focus and X1.

en·able = transitive verb = to make possible, practical, or easy

"The autofocus of the X1 enables photographers to react in an instant."

Seems to me they are stating that the camera's autofocus should make it possible for the user to react in an instance when making a photograph... not just to pose with the camera quickly.

Marketing fluff or not, it is silly not to want a firmware update if it can help (though I agree bitching about it isn't going to make it happen any sooner). I use my X1 a lot, but still dream of what it could have been. IF Leica can improve the speed of this camera, it could be a true classic and a lot more versatile. Why wouldn't I want that?

Keep in mind that the vast majority of firmware updates for digital cameras just fixes some bugs – some so obscure that most owners of the camera in question have never encountered those bugs. If Leica should manage to also improve performance just by updating the firmware that would certainly be great, but if they don’t then you still have the camera you paid for (minus some obscure bugs, say).

It’s just firmware after all, not a new camera. No reason to get obsessive about this.

Ricoh's small camera division has a history of going beyond the fix it and implements desired changes......... I read that a new firmware is available again for the GXR

Yah I think they added scene modes and filters as well, due to user demand.

That's a very interesting system to me, but it's also very expensive for an experiment. I'd like to ice up someone's 28/50 kit who no longer wants it second hand.

I don't disagree with you.

Luckily I sold my X1 before everyone else gets fed up of waiting for the firmware and the market is flooded with cheap used X1s.

I got most of my money back and bought a Canon G10, and for a punt a hardly used ancient Oympus E1 which to be frank is quite simply staggeringly brilliant and underrated. But I have an original M8 and a sweet range of Leica glass which I regard as a real Leica :-)

All joking apart, a while back I was extremely negative about the X1 camera because I did in fact believe the marketing hype about it's speed in the metaphorical field which to me was 'the street'. But my opinion is that the camera remains a fantastic imaging device, but a device falls short of what its form suggests: street photography.

I do hope that when the firmware is updated that you will all be in possession of the camera you deserve.

In regards to suggestion that it is naive to be seduced by sales fluff: I'm not convinced it is always the case that the product does not live up to the sales blurb. I have purchased many items after reading the sales blurb and found that the product meets and even surpasses my expectations. A recent example is my Audi car. One year on and it still makes me smile; I would say that in this and many other cases the sales patter and product are harmonious.

I still think the X1 is great - for what it is!
