Hell, I'd be happy if the only things they changed were the number of knob turns required for the manual focus and if you could get it retain the focus setting after it autopowers down. 2 lines of stinking code! Hell if they want I can make the changes for free!

Of course you know what will happen when ( and if) the new firmware comes out?

1. The vast majority of owners will quietly download and install the update when they realise there is one and gradually will realise" hey, I reckon my camera feels a little slicker" and carry on taking photos.

2. There will be a load of Leica X1 " bricks" because the owners update was rushed/ messed up and the resulting bad press at how useless Leica are, releasing an update that trashed their cameras

3. Loads of people will complain their X1 is now even slower and more unusable than it was before

4. Loads of people will say their update went fine and there is no improvement

5. Loads of people will say their update went fine and everything was fixed

6. loads of people will just complain anyway about everything and how difficult the update is to perform.

7. Loads of people wont even know there is an update available and didn't ever think anything was wrong with their X1's

8. There will be a new thread asking when v3 will be coming out because their X1 is crap and how could Leica sell a camera with so many faults

And that's not even mentioning those who sell their x1 or never had one and bought a Fuji X100 and realise it isn't the best camera in the world and isn't as good as everyone said it was, even before it was available......

Me?

Well, I ended up selling mine. However firmware not being released was the last of it, and it was hard to let it go. I really hope leica release an x2 at some point with a 2.0 lens and a bit faster operational speed, but who knows - I may well end up regretting it and buying another one later :)

I have a real feeling this is %100 correct. Oh well such is life...

I agree that leica cannot afford release a firmware with mediocre improvements.

Keep in mind that the vast majority of firmware updates for digital cameras just fixes some bugs – some so obscure that most owners of the camera in question have never encountered those bugs. If Leica should manage to also improve performance just by updating the firmware that would certainly be great, but if they don’t then you still have the camera you paid for (minus some obscure bugs, say).

It’s just firmware after all, not a new camera. No reason to get obsessive about this.

Ricoh wil release a feature enhancing FW upgrade for GXR and GRD III on March 28. About the 3rd or 4th FW upgrade since release of the GXR! The upgrades were at least as much for adding features and improve functionality as they were for fixing bugs.

However, Ricoh is best in class in this field, and Leica among the worst......! But it is never too late to learn from others.

Ok, most here know I love my X1. However, Leica stated the following about the X1 on their website:

"Autofocus Competence

The autofocus of the X1 enables photographers to react in an instant. At the same time, the autofocus mode can be modified to suit the situation. Photographers have a choice of 1 or 11 AF segments and an additional high-speed mode for each. When taking photos of people, face-recognition mode allows complete concentration on the composition and framing of the picture."

This is simply not true and that is why we are hoping for AF speed to be improved via firmware (so we can react in an instant). Therefore, we did not get the camera we paid for.

That said, I was an early adopter, I bought it without trying it (and that is not Leica's fault), and that is the price I'm going to have to pay if the AF speed never improves.

The autofocus of the X1 enables photographers to react in an instant.

That says that the photographer reacts in an instant - it doesn't say that the camera does. There is a subtle, but important, difference
