hi,

not been able to find any info. on these lenses, in terms of quality on the M8

anyone have it and can comment ? Particularly on corner sharpness vis-a-vis centre sharpness

 

I presume:

 

1. Rangefinder coupling is included

2. Is 6bit coding necessary ? Someone told me it wasn't with lenses 50mm and above !

I have used the 75mm f 1.8 since last Fall, I have been happy.

 

I uploaded a random image with detail, provided center and corner details. M8.2 Voigtlander 75mm Heliar Classic 75mm/f1.8 - - Image shot at f4 125 sec

Non - Processed ...just crop ...no sharpening.

 

Rangefinder works fine with the lens

I have the lens and love it. Fantastic for portraits.

I have mine 6-bit coded, but frankly I mainly did it to help me identify which photos I shot with it.

 

I have a quite a few images in that link above, but this one in particular was shot wide open or maybe f/2.

I have been offered a 1973 90mm tele-elmarit f2.8 (mint) for the same price as a new 75mm heliar.

I prefer the f1.8 of the heliar (is it usable ?) but like the idea of some extra range and also the leica (leitz) brand

 

Can't make up my mind ....

75 1.8 Review

 

As far as coding, all of the pictures of my review are with the lens uncoded. I never had an issue with this. I couldn't see much difference on this lens coded or uncoded.

 

On the M8, 75mm is a great length for a lot of different work. The quality is top notch on the 1.8 and the lens feels amazing. For positive in the hand. I don't like the screw on the lens hood, but that is easily overlooked. The lens is large and hefty, but not overly huge. A bit long when compared to other 75s, but inline with the Summicrons and Summilux.

 

I like soft and dreamy. I also really like diffused. I did not like the 1.8 on the M8 wide open. It just didn't do it for me. I didn't get a diffused look, nor was is old school dreamy. It was just soft. Nothing special to make it stand out. It is soft everywhere though, including center. It IS usablely soft though. You will not look like you just have oof images. They are usable.

 

Personally, I actually prefer the 75 f/2.5 lens. For a $300 lens, it is amazing how good it is. It is half the weight and quite small. The quality and rendering is also very similar to the 1.8 after F/4. At 2.5 the F/2.5 lens is way preferable to the 1.8 lens at 2.8 in terms of sharpness.

 

I can also put the 2.5 in my jean pocket. The 1.8 is a bit of a stretch. More of a larger coat pocket lens. The shots of my review give a decent indication of perspective and size. Hopefully they help!
