Bill Sievers Posted January 28, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 28, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) My camera told me one of my 1 gig sandisc cards is locked, when the card was definately not locked. It would not reformat either. Popped the card in the Ricoh GRD and it works fine. The message came up after I did an upload off the card (in a card reader) and reinserted the card into the camera. chetccox Posted January 28, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 28, 2007 Sometimes the little switch on the side can get moved a little on insertion. I have not had this happen but read it on another thread in this forum. Try inserting the card very carefully while pushing it slightly towards the side away from the card protection switch. ritomo Posted January 28, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 28, 2007 Hello Bill, I had a same axperience in my M8. I took out battery once in such a case and tried to load it with battery again. I was actually shooting away and the camera decided the card was locked and quit shooting. cometsoft Posted January 29, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 29, 2007 That happened a couple of times to me today with a 2 gig Sandisk. It happened in the middle of a session. There were only 55 pictures on the card. I deleted 2 images and it proceeded to work fine. I recorded maybe 10 more images and then it started doing it again. Powered down and restarted and that seemed to work. Also my battery had been low (one bar). I replaced the battery and it recorded ok for a while, then I started getting the card lock message again. It is clearly a bug of some sort because the SD card was most definitely not locked nor had the card protection switch moved even a tiny bit. I ended up reformatting the card using my Mac. The M8 then recognised the card as unlocked and I was able to reformat it again in the camera. I've used that card a number of times since without further incident. Ross Stockwell Posted September 3, 2007 Share #13 Posted September 3, 2007 I got the 'memory card is locked' message and 'camera freeze' the other day (August 30th). This is the first problem I have had with the M8 (thought I was getting off lucky!). FYI - I am running the newest firmware (August 2007 1.107). I got my camera in June 2007 from B&H photo in NY. Unfortunately my camera was unusable for 2 days - despite removing my battery (over night). I also checked out my 3 SD cards (Lexar 2GB 133) on another camera. They were defintiely NOT Locked. I reformated one of the cards in my second camera and re-loaded it in to the M8 and still got the error. Fuming - and composing a sharply worded memo to Leica in my mind - I gave-up on the photography for the remainder of my holiday. But because I just can not leave these things alone - I tried the camera again on the flight home - and to my surprise it worked fine - for about five images and then started up with the same problem again. I powered on/off a couple of times -- and the camera worked - for another two frames - then stopped working. Then without powering off - fiddled with the shutter speed dial - and behold! - the camera began to work again. Very strange. Why this should happen after nearly three months of relatively problem free experience is beyond me. The voodoo approach to M8 camera repair is unsettling to me. Ross Stockwell Posted October 9, 2007 Share #14 Posted October 9, 2007 Answering my own post I continued to have this problem over a couple of weeks - with multiple cards. Somewhere I had read a suggestion (somewhere) to clean the contact points of the SD card with a cotton swab and bit of iso-alcohol - and to reinerst the card a couple of times in the camera's reader (of course the camera is 'off' when doing this) - I guess to clean the reader head. This seems to have cleared up the problem - absolutely no problems since. Conjecture: It must be the M8's card reader is more sensitive than most - but reports a 'locked card' message instead of a "can't read card" message.
