Advertisement Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Hi phancj, Take a look here Fun comparison X1/M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Mr_Jones Posted March 17, 2011 Author Share #42 Â Posted March 17, 2011 I like it too, the sharpness is very appealing. There is a slight shift in the green which is very natural too.

prk60091 Posted March 17, 2011 Share #45  Posted March 17, 2011 Often, when there is someone who dares to compare an M9 with another camera is violating a taboo. Why not? I think the pictures show nicely that the difference between the picture quality is (in that example, size and way of presentation) marginal. But sure it is no argument against an M9, but a good argument for an X1 IMHO, because for about quarter of price one get maybe - let´s say 80-90 percent of the Image quality of the expensive one.The rest is a matter of personal taste.   there was a thread at dpreview comparing the m9 to the x100..  i found the comments hysterical- and proved to me a point.  fanboys (leica/fuji/canon/nikon/apple/android/linux/lightroom/photoshop/aperture) will always find a reason why (leica/fuji/canon/nikon/apple/android/linux/lightroom/photoshop/aperture) is better than the rest... Mr_Jones Posted March 17, 2011 Author Share #47  Posted March 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Two more, in this case I think they show the M9 painting a very emotive and powerful image. I wouldn't mind getting this from the X1 from time to time. Not sure if it's possible to reach this with post processing. Welcome, dear visitor! h00ligan Posted March 17, 2011 Share #48 Â Posted March 17, 2011 If you are shooting jpg, try the other modes..like natural, etc.. Play with saturation and contrast. Â I'd think you can get close in those terms.
Mr_Jones Posted March 17, 2011 Author Share #49 Â Posted March 17, 2011 I'm shooting raw, and so far down that path that I have never looked at the jpeg options on the X1, I might try it though.
ChiILX1 Posted March 17, 2011 Share #50 Â Posted March 17, 2011 They both look stunning. I like the X1 pictures better actually just personal preference.

Well raw by its nature requires some post, so you can make a profile once you find a moody look you like and apply on import. Fwiw.

Fwiw. Â I tries some of the settings in camera last night and really enjoyed the results. Thanks for the heads up. Â I've got very used to the plain raw files and the excellent white balance of the X1 has stopped a lot of the post I used to get up to, a lot of images I leave alone expect maybe cropping and straightening. Seeing the M9 images had me looking into some new areas of post.
gjames9142 Posted March 18, 2011 Share #53 Â Posted March 18, 2011 The other giveaway is the inherently greater depth of field of the X-1, although you don't say whether they were both shot at the same aperture.

Digitom Posted March 19, 2011 Share #55  Posted March 19, 2011 Thomas, I couldnt agree more. In fact it is usually the case where we have to pay a few times more for a marginal increase (sometimes only a few percent) in Image quality. The X1 is also marginally better in image quality than say the GXR only but the price difference is huge.  I have a digilux 2 and it wont start now ( having not been used much in 3 years). You just reminded me, I need to bring it in for servicing. This has happened once several years ago was a minor fix, I hope the same this time round.  CJ   Well, id someone will pay that money more for a marginal image quality it is ok IMHO. I own a DIgiluy 2 also and I think for me the IQ is very good. I also have now new a D-Lux 5 and I think the image quality is same, compared to Digilux 2. With D2 I can do more things in direction of "real photography" as playing a bit more with depth of sharpness area and e.g. zooming during exposure to get nice "art" effects or so. The handling od D2 is marvellous, I would buy another one now, if it will fail. For me, the decision of buying maybe an M9 is actual at the moment I think I come to end with my D2 - means there is no more "challenge" when I use that cam. So maybe I am wrong but I think many people buy an M9 and never use a small portion of the possibilities while using that camera. I think my way of photography will "end" with an M9 (or a later models) one day. So it is good to develop slowly and then grow through time.
phancj Posted March 20, 2011 Share #56 Â Posted March 20, 2011 Thomas, Â I think the M9 is for keeps, as long as it lasts and repair costs being reasonable. Â I have been contemplating an M9 for as long as I had the X1 (over a year) the image quality is astounding but the lack of AF is a real bummer for me. I want the shooting to be fun and am not sure if doing Manual focus the whole day for a week on a trip with my poorer eyesight will constitute fun... I am still hoping Leica does indeed provide an AF R-solution that has been rumored. if not, I'll bite the bullet and take the M9 as it is, but I'd likely keep the X1 and even buy the X2 as I think the AF is important for trips. What I think is the M9/10 will ultimately replace my DSLR, and the X1/2 for trips. Â CJ
Mr_Jones Posted March 20, 2011 Author Share #57 Â Posted March 20, 2011 I've settled on the X1 for trips too, the results I've seen comparing the M9 and X1 this time have convinced me that the M9 doesn't offer anything more for me. In fact it would probably complicate the process and the results are not going to be greatly improved.
phancj Posted March 20, 2011 Share #58 Â Posted March 20, 2011 But the M9 with a noctilux or even a summilux well its a different story altogether....I tried and all I can say IQ is way more stellar only gripe for me is operational...if Nikon can do 1.4 primes with accurate AF I do not see why Leica may not do this in future... Mr_Jones Posted March 20, 2011 Author Share #59 Â Posted March 20, 2011 Completely agree, there are levels of IQ and the M9 can go way beyond anything I've seen from the X1. In my case I've reached my level for a camera of this type (travel) with the X1 and it's working out very well.
