Advertisement Posted March 15, 2011 Posted March 15, 2011 Hi Lightwrangler, Take a look here Fun comparison X1/M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Danielsan Posted March 16, 2011 Share #22 Â Posted March 16, 2011 The m9 picture is at bottom, it looks again much better then X1. I thought the difference wont be that big but the M9 picture looks more like real life, sharpness, contrast, colors, the x1 in comparison looks a bit dull. But i wont buy an M9, its just to much for somebody who take a picture once in a month or two, even the x1 is to much. But it would be interesting to see OOC jpeg with saturation highest, contrast highest, sharpness high etc..

Mr_Jones Posted March 16, 2011 Author Share #24 Â Posted March 16, 2011 Thanks David. Â We were very lucky to see it at all, one flight in 5 days due to very high winds. We had to get to Dunedin later that day!

I can say with some confidence that they are not the closest to reality in this case. Although they may still be the better looking.  I'm attaching an unaltered version from the X1, and an extreme contrast version. The first one although dull is closer to real life. wda Posted March 16, 2011 Share #26 Â Posted March 16, 2011 Mr Jones, did you manually focus the X1 for the air-to-ground shot?
Mr_Jones Posted March 16, 2011 Author Share #27  Posted March 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Mr Jones, did you manually focus the X1 for the air-to-ground shot?  Yes manual focus at infinity, and setting exposure and shutter speed to favour a faster shutter. The air to ground shot is f4.0 exp 1/500. The M9 was f16 exp /60, I believe he was shooting a small aperture to increase focal depth but there are obviously problems with camera movement in those conditions.  I'm attaching a flat version of the original raw from the x1 which clearly looks like it was taken through perspex, however there is much less contrast and saturation. phancj Posted March 16, 2011 Share #28  Posted March 16, 2011 Mr Jones,  I hope you do not take offense at me taking liberty at tweaking your X1 photo just for fun....I can only do so much with that small file but here's the version I came out with, not sure how it looks on everyone else's screen ....  These comparisons are fun, whether they mean anything or not!  CJ Welcome, dear visitor! Mr_Jones Posted March 16, 2011 Author Share #29 Â Posted March 16, 2011 No offense, I will mail you the raw file if you pm me, as I would be interested to see what you come up with. The version you have already posted looks fine on my screen, kind of between the original and the first one I posted. I will have another look. Danielsan Posted March 16, 2011 Share #30 Â Posted March 16, 2011 That one is much better i think, the two original X1 pictures looked always kind of milky, i cant explain it.
Mr_Jones Posted March 16, 2011 Author Share #31 Â Posted March 16, 2011 I took a second look and it does look good, seems to bring out some detail in the smaller waterfalls and I like the green. I would be happy to send you the original.

eelekim Posted March 16, 2011 Share #34 Â Posted March 16, 2011 "Enhanced" reality on pictures is usually more attractive and preferable to us. However, real is real. To my eyes, X1's pictures look closer to the reality than those from M8, M8.2, M9, X100 and the other compact cameras I've ever used. It's one of the reasons why I like it so much. Â I know I'm boring...
Mr_Jones Posted March 16, 2011 Author Share #35 Â Posted March 16, 2011 I don't think it's boring to like photos to accurately represent the subject, but I can understand why a pure record of the subject can be less emotive than an affected version. otto.f Posted March 16, 2011 Share #36 Â Posted March 16, 2011 Actually without cheating I'd think the second was the m9. Â Dust on the sensor, indeed
Digitom Posted March 16, 2011 Share #37  Posted March 16, 2011 Often, when there is someone who dares to compare an M9 with another camera is violating a taboo. Why not? I think the pictures show nicely that the difference between the picture quality is (in that example, size and way of presentation) marginal. But sure it is no argument against an M9, but a good argument for an X1 IMHO, because for about quarter of price one get maybe - let´s say 80-90 percent of the Image quality of the expensive one. The rest is a matter of personal taste.
phancj Posted March 17, 2011 Share #38 Â Posted March 17, 2011 Thomas, Â I couldnt agree more. In fact it is usually the case where we have to pay a few times more for a marginal increase (sometimes only a few percent) in Image quality. The X1 is also marginally better in image quality than say the GXR only but the price difference is huge. Â I have a digilux 2 and it wont start now ( having not been used much in 3 years). You just reminded me, I need to bring it in for servicing. This has happened once several years ago was a minor fix, I hope the same this time round. phancj Posted March 17, 2011 Share #39  Posted March 17, 2011 Hey Andy,  here's a downsized version of what I sent to you. Just a few quick sliders in PS Elements.  I noticed that there was probably a fair bit of mist/fine water spray so the dng was looking hazy.  Let me know what you think of the full-sized jpeg which I emailed you. I downsized it and it looks considerably poorer here.  CJ Welcome, dear visitor!
