I did have a search, but after reading three long threads caved in. just wanted to know there were no problems/'issues' before i did the update. apologies for being a slobby sloth

I have updated a M8.2 and a M8 and no problems

from leicarumors:

"What’s fixed:

Resolving the error message “Shutter fault”: When shooting in C-Mode (Continuous) or taking several pictures consecutively in S-Mode (Single), the message “Shutter Fault” may appear on the display.

Additional notes:

  • After updating to the new 2.005 firmware the LEICA M8 with quiet 1/4000s shutter and LEICA M8.2 can not be „downgraded“ to the previous firmware.
  • User profiles will be deleted during the update process and will need to be recreated after the firmware upgrade process."

thank you so much.

my M8 has an 1/8000 shutter, did Leica make the M8 (not including the 8.2) in 1/4000 shutter as well?

so is this implying those with the original 1/8000 shutter M8's can revert back to earlier firmware?

also wondered if white balance has been improved since FW version 1.201?

The M8.2 shutter is quieter and has a "quiet release mode" but only goes to 1/4000

Leica offers an "upgrade" to the M8.2 shutter for M8 owners

http://uk.leica-camera.com/service/service_m_system/m8upgrade/

by implication yes, but I have not tried to, nor read anyone who needed to, revert to previous firmware

No, you cannot revert from back to earlier firmware. It wouldn't make any sense anyway, as there is nothing there that would make it desirable. The WB is ecxellent from the May 2007 (iirc) update. There was no need to improve it further in later firmware versions.

The shutter is a purely mechanical modification, with the attendant firmware to control it of course.

I don't believe the current software would make any difference with an unupgraded M8. IIRC, the only thing 2.005 did was correct the "shutter fault" that could occur with the upgraded shutter. The new functionality is simply not applicable and doesn't apply to a camera that can't use it. For the same reason, the later firmware wouldn't cause any difficulty on an earlier camera.

As Jaap said, with several of the later firmware upgrades, there's no going back; but there's also no reason to go back.

If you've survived this long without it, you probably don't need it. :)

Yeah, that petition is hopeful but dumb because Leica has said it can't be done.

They added other features before when they could, and some of them were things we didn't even know we wanted.

You can check the Reichmann M9 intro video for the specifics, or see any of the dozens of threads here on the topic. There's just a small group of people who won't believe anything Leica tells them, and repeatedly trot out inept arguments like "Well, they told us they couldn't make a full-frame M camera as well, but they did."

The M8 and M8.2 aren't going to get any new features. They may get minor tweaks, but the cameras are fully expanded as they are. I may be wrong, but I worked for them two long to doubt them when they talk about things like this.
