Filing out V35 negative carrier to 25x37?

I have done it ;-)

I used a file (ok, that was the obvious) with the holder in a small wisegrip. You have to blacken the filed edges, otherwise you have reflections. Most simple a couple of layers of black sharpie, better some mate black paint.

File little and check often *g* its easy to end up with too big a hole.....

Its not too hard if you are handy with a file, take care not to file too much at the back side where the 2 nobs prevent you from pushing the film farther back in case you did too much.

Leica offered one at one time and it was discontinued very fast.

Without an official explanation, we presume it did not hold film sufficiently flat.

I had one on order, and what came was a double glass with an oversize blue mask embedded inside the top glass to allow for printing some clear area.

If you work long enough, you will discover the actual image size is different on screw mounts to early M to late M to R and it also varies depending on the focal length of the lens. Perhaps that is why it was discontinued. No given size is correct for all circumstances.

Early M image area bigger than late M . Wides on screw cameras have almost no clear space between frames. If I remember properly, the image area on a R camera is centered and M cameras is off center a little. Do not hold me to it.

I have one these too, my V35 came with three different holders, I refer to the holder you mention as the "Black Border" holder. While a little extra space would be nice, it sure holds the neg flat! :)

We use to notch our cameras by taking a file and carving a slot in a different spot along the film sprocket holes. Prints sure looked funny when printed with black borders and splash of the image would jet down in the sprocket holes.

I have one of the Leica 25x37mm negative holders, Leica item #17012. Took much searching, but found one new-in-box about 5 years ago on ebay. I absolutely love it and have had no issues with film flatness. It has glass top and bottom. Previously I had filed out a standard 24x36 carrier with glass removed. The 25x37 is just a bit nicer and maybe faster to use, but both work well. I'd suggest several different size files on hand, take your time, and clean it well afterwards. Enjoy your full-frame printing with the wonderful black border and the statement of no cropping!

Do not hold me to it.

...there was mention of a slight loss of contrast (highlight definition adversely impacted, anyone?) brought about by the extraneous light from beyond the frame, but I have never been able to replicate this phenomenon, despite extensive testing.

I have two types of V35 25x37mm negative carrier:

#07011, with one AN glass plate

#07012, with two AN glass plates

The 07011 is quite straightforward, with a 25x37mm frame and one AN glass plate. The 07012, as you have correctly pointed out, actually incorporates a massive 27x39mm frame on the lower part, and a 25x37mm blue mask embedded in the upper glass plate to allow for printing some clear area. I have been unable to detect any difference in performance between both carriers.

Likewise, do not hold me to it.
