GHEN Posted March 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, So I am going to buy several rolls of film and have them shipped to my home so I have film on hand. I was planning on keeping them in the unheated portion of my basement. I have some Ilford HP5 B@W print film, and was going to buy some Kodak Tri-X, but was also planning on getting some color film. Any special storage for these, or is a cool, dry place OK? Thanks, GHEN

Gift Posted March 7, 2011 Share #2 Posted March 7, 2011 It all depends on how long they will be stored. I usually keep my film (color and B&W) on the fridge and forget about it. Cheers.

earleygallery Posted March 7, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 7, 2011 If you're going to use the film in a fairly short space of time, i.e. within its 'use by' date then you don't need to worry about where you store it (extreme heat avoided of course). If you want to keep the film fresh for longer then stick it in the freezer. Professional colour film is stored in a fridge to maintain the colour balance of rolls from the same batch. There's no need to keep B&W film in the fridge, it will last longer of course but the freezer is much better if that's the aim. Oh, and let it 'thaw' for a little while before opening/loading it. rjans Posted March 12, 2011 Share #5 Posted March 12, 2011 All films go into the fridge. If they reach expiry date I put them into the freezer. I found information about long term storage on Fuji's website. They recommend the freezer (except instant film). Last year I used slide film already past expiry date for 2 years but kept in the freezer, no problems encountered. Best Roger
andybarton Posted March 12, 2011 Share #6 Posted March 12, 2011 I have some old Astia, well past it's expiry date, that's been in the freezer. It's OK if used quickly when out of the freezer, but leave it in the bag for a month or two and the colours are off. All my film, even fresh film, gets stored in the freezer and taken out as I need it.
pico Posted March 12, 2011 Share #7 Posted March 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Several rolls is a pittance. Put them anywhere except in direct sunlight or heat and be happy. Just use them before the expiry date. Some of us have cases of film in a deep-freeze, and IMHO, that's not 'freezing them in time'. The film is still exposed to ordinary radiation. It does not last forever. Use the film. Purchase more and be happy. .
