Guest joewehry Posted March 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Photographers who love Gunter Osterloh's excellent book, "Leica M: Advanced Photo School", will be happy to learn it is being released by Lark as a second edition, now including the Leica MP. For those who aren't collectors and don't want to pay $700 for the first edition, you can pre-order the second edition from Amazon for under $23. It is being released in June at a list price of around $

peter_n Posted March 7, 2011 Share #2 Posted March 7, 2011 This'll be the third edition though right? I have the 1st ed. published in 1987, the the 2nd ed. published in 2005, so wouldn't this be the 3rd ed? Unless it's exactly the same as the 2nd ed. with just an MP chapter added. The 2nd ed. is quite different from the 1st ed...
beoon Posted March 7, 2011 Share #3 Posted March 7, 2011 This'll be the third edition though right? The 2nd ed. is quite different from the 1st ed... You are correct that this will be the third version. I also have the first and second editions but to be honest I was very disappointed with the second version as it is almost identical to the first. The cover of the new third version states that this now includes the MP! I would have preferred it to include the MP & M9. I will not order this book without having a glance through it first to see if it is any different.
Michael Geschlecht Posted March 8, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 8, 2011 Hello Everybody, If it ends up being pretty much the same as the 1st printing will that mean a person can sit with almost any page by itself and not have to worry about the weight of the entire volume on their lap? In reality a good book well laid out & well done w/ much useful information brought together in one volume. One advantage of its coming apart is that it does in fact come apart & sometimes that can be useful as for example when trying to utilize various charts, diagrams & explanations from different parts of the book simutaneously. They can be spread out on a large table in a topically convinient pattern. Perhaps there should be 2 versions of the forthcoming printing. Best Regards, Michael
roydonian Posted March 9, 2011 Share #5 Posted March 9, 2011 It is currently 2012, nine years after the MP was launched. Since then, we have had the M8 in 2006, the M8.2 in 2008, and the M9 in 2009. So the book seem to be more than a little out-of-date before it is even published.
peter_n Posted March 10, 2011 Share #6 Posted March 10, 2011 It is currently 2012, nine years after the MP was launched.I knew there was a bit of a time difference between this side of the pond and you lot over there, but I didn't realize it was that big! This explains why I'm having problems getting to see my football team on the telly. So who won the FA Cup in 2011? If it ends up being pretty much the same as the 1st printing will that mean a person can sit with almost any page by itself and not have to worry about the weight of the entire volume on their lap?My 1st ed. isn't coming apart. I believe that your fellow countrymen use the expression "typo" for the end results of what happens when ageing (and/or hasty) fingers strike the wrong key and failing eyesight does not catch the error. But despite that typo I think that the point I made still stands - a book on Leica M technque published this year needs to address the use of the M8 and M9. I have the author's R and M books, and have been hoping that he'd produce a revised M book that included the M8 and 9 and explained how to get the best out of a digital sensor. I've written books (on non-photographic topics), and my publishers always expected that the text I delivered would be as up-to-date as possible. A manuscript that ignored developments of the previous several years would have been rejected. Best regards, Doug

Yes it's called a typo over here, one of the many new words I learned for familiar things when I came to live here first.
