bruno7 Posted March 5, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 5, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys! Need some opinions... I have a chance to buy a used M8 with cca 17000 actuations. It comes with 1 year warranty. To buy or not to buy? I also have a chance to buy M8 with cca 2000 actuations and no warranty at all. The price difference is $200 (the one without warranty is cheaper, of course...). What to do? They're both perfect looking, no scratches anywhere, sensors clean as well as finders. I am leaning towards the one with warranty although it has so many actuations. When do you guys have your M8s serviced? After how many actuations or years of use? Thanks for your help. Advertisement Posted March 5, 2011 Posted March 5, 2011 Hi bruno7, Take a look here How many actuations is 'safe'?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted March 5, 2011 Share #2 Posted March 5, 2011 Dealer or Leica warranty? The latter will allow you to send the camera to service for any issue, and you'll likely get everything checked in the process. Not to complicate matters, but you can obtain, or extend, a Leica warranty by using the upgrade program (even if one feature). I wouldn't worry so much about actuations in this case, since even 17k is far less than these cameras are built to withstand. bruno7 Posted March 5, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted March 5, 2011 Thanks, Jeff. It's actually a dealer warranty, not a Leica one. But I think I'm gonna go with the more expensive camera at least for that warranty. Besides, this is a Silver one (that I really really want), the cheaper one is black... ho_co Posted March 5, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 5, 2011 David, that's the answer: Go with the one you want. (I also prefer the looks of the silver finish.) At some point, something will go wrong and you (or someone else) will have to pay for repair. Until then, you'll be happier with the one that seems the better choice. And now, you've got someone else to blame for bad advice if something goes wrong after a year and a day! And a welcome aboard the forum from me as well! You'll like the M8! otto.f Posted March 5, 2011 Share #5 Posted March 5, 2011 I would trust 17000 actuations more than 2000. Hidden problems would have come out in 17000 actuations and would have been repaired in the mean time. 2000 actuations is quite few to overcome the problem of dust on the sensor caused by the shutter , which is a known problem with the M8 in the first period of using it and which vanishes after sufficient actuations
jaapv Posted March 5, 2011 Share #6 Posted March 5, 2011 I would trust that shutter to get to at least 50.000 actuations or maybe even 150.000 without wearing down.
bruno7 Posted March 6, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted March 6, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks very much, guys! I think I am convinced right now. Now if you only know about Silver Biogon 35/2 I'd be happy! :-) As it seems that there are none used to buy! This lens must be really good, that's why people keep it I guess. Thanks again, wish me luck with my new M8! David
Jeff S Posted March 6, 2011 Share #8 Posted March 6, 2011 Now if you only know about Silver Biogon 35/2 I'd be happy! :-) New ones are easy to find for $1k, not pocket change, but about $700 less than a new Summarit. I doubt you'd save more than a couple hundred bucks searching around for a mint used one. Life is short. Happy shooting. Jeff
due163 Posted March 6, 2011 Share #9 Posted March 6, 2011 I read somewhere that the M series shutters were good for 400k actuations, but that may have been the film bodies
Dan States Posted March 7, 2011 Share #10 Posted March 7, 2011 Leica never quoted a figure so anything out there is speculation. Regarding the M8 for sale...I'd bet a camera with only 2000 actuations in 3 years was pretty unloved for some reason...I've found that lenses that look like new after many years are often so because they were duds that got resold over and over....a well worn lens is a sign it was well liked by someone.
