d2mini Posted March 4, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 4, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can anyone attest to how much abuse a Leica rangefinder camera (especially m8/m9) can take? I've been afraid of knocking the rangefinder out of alignment but wondering if I've been overly cautious. I'd figure PJ's, guys on safari, and some other fields of photography where small rangefinders come in handy would be pretty abusive, but then I wouldn't know how often those cameras are being adjusted. Any idea?

jaapv Posted March 4, 2011 Share #2 Posted March 4, 2011 A hard slam on the bottom, like dropping it from two or three feet on a hard surface(even inside a case) may dislodge the vertical alignment. Strong vibrations, like putting it on the dashboard of a light aircraft for a period of time, may affect the adjustment. For the rest, it is pretty well rock-solid. Anyway, readjusting is not very difficult for a Leica technician, so should not cost either much downtime nor money.
Luuk Posted March 4, 2011 Share #3 Posted March 4, 2011 vibrations, like putting it on the dashboard of a light aircraft for a period of time, may affect the adjustment. Mine wandered of in a overhead bagage compartment of a B737. (infinity only). Reajusting was no problem. Luuk

swamiji Posted March 5, 2011 Share #6 Posted March 5, 2011 I would say your Rangefinder could take lots of abuse, look at all the abuse it gets in this forum. Lets have a be nice to your Rangefinder day. But beware, all of those with EVIL intent... Sorry couldn't resist. But seriously, I have taken my M9 on many journeys, elephants, camels, rickshaws, in addition to small local flights in India. Never an issue. The Rangefinder always was tack sharp. I wasn't but the camera was fine.
tobey bilek Posted March 5, 2011 Share #7 Posted March 5, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Jets have lots of high frequency vibration that is hard on screws etc. Humans can not feel them. Wrap the cameras with cloth to help protect them.

jaapv Posted March 5, 2011 Share #10 Posted March 5, 2011 I never flew with them - but from friends' comments I understand one needs to have one's lower limbs amputated to fit into their seats
