Just a thought...

Hello Conrad,

Bit of a hornet's nest, eh? :)

My views are as follows, although doubtless few of the whingers will agree: On the Forum II the instructions Andreas gave were to post a favorite picture. Nothing about criticism was mentioned. Should someone wish it, they can ask for it. If the picture has no merit or holds no interest for anyone here, it will drop to the bottom. In my case, I comment only when I see something I like. This isn't the LUG. No reason to start arguements here or to be impolite.

While my pictures are rarely "great art", sometimes I DO get lucky thankfully. The subjects I enjoy shooting are not what the majority post here. At least those I post generally demonstate the image quality available with Leica glass and gear. I believe THAT'S the point. My pictures are for me and I've only rarely sold them. If others find pleasure in viewing them, that's a plus, but hardly essential. I'm in no need of positive reinforcement.

Many subjects posted here are not the kind I'd likely shoot, I believe I know a good picture when I see one, however. I'm glad that someone bothered to share and on occasion I might even learn something! :) Why else would I even bother to visit?

Personally, my pet peeve is those who feel the need to dump their SD cards here, making it much more difficult to find the decent shots.

I'm definitely with you on this one, which probably means that we BOTH need more sleep!:D

William (Lamb) - This is what happens when one still suffers from jet lag. Anyway, while I wanted to start a discussion on the matter, just expressing a personal POV, I did not expect to read such baseless diatribe. I guess he must be lacking even more sleep than either of us. ;)

Hi William, perhaps it would be better if people who don't want others to comment on their image to include text along the lines of 'DO NOT COMMENT ON THIS IMAGE'. The new software allows quite large text to be used that would surely not be missed by anyone viewing the photograph.

Hi, Conrad,

Just off his meds, I expect...:D

Steve,

As usual, you've got it dead backwards. THIS IS THE LEICA USERS FORUM, NOT THE LUG. :)

BTW, there's a Canon forum which uses this same vBulletin software. Maybe you'd be in Nirvana there?

Hi William, not sure why you have to reply in such a manner. You mentioned that people should ask for cristicism if they wanted. I was merely trying to say that since the majority of people appear to be agreeable to critiques it might be better if the few who _didn't_ want their images subject to critiques should say so.

The Canon crack was a cheap shot. I know that, you know that and I'm sure others do too.

Please learn that placing a smiley at the end of an sarcastic sentance does not make it any the less irritating.

It's a beautiful sunny day here. My last summer in the city before I move to Asia in a few weeks. I'll go sit on a patio and have lunch and watch the sights. :D

Let's all enjoy the day.;)

Perhaps you could explain to the uninitiated, what is the difference at the LUG (the Leica Users Group)? I have a couple of pictures there and no one has ever passed coment about any of them. So, if it's a place for critique to be made, it's pretty much a failure from my experience. Having just had a look over there, I can't see many comments or critiques of anyone's work, so it's not just me.

The rest of the LUG just seems to be an email list of nonsense most of the time, with archives available for anyone who wishes to look. There's no forum, as such. Or am I missing something?

I have never been able to work out how the email list and the area where you have a load of your photos posted are connected.

Andy,

Were I REALLY unkind, I'd suggest you subscribe.:) The LUG IS, in effect, largely "The Former Leica Users Group". The Gallery is for folks who don't have a website to post photos. It is expected that you will link your photos to the LUG so that they can be "reviewed". Since most of the people there are "people shooters", not much point in sharing there.

Brian seems like a nice guy, but a very lax moderator. Lots of O.T. "Sturm und Drang" there. A few excellent photographers, but many are clapped-out press hacks IMO. There are a few Leica people still there, but very few...

I've recently paid for my server space, BTW, but I'm not at liberty to expand on that. If you really want to know more, let's take it off-line.

I don't "get" LUG at all.

So, users don't go to the gallery section without being asked? Yet, people who do look at other's work are then scathing about it? Is that right? But scathing in an email and not on the gallery section?

I have subscribed, but I get a daily email of about 10 pages of stuff, that I am expected to respond to by email. Hello? I most certainly don't want individual posts sending to me by email - what a nightmare!

Nowhere on the website can one see current threads. It's like playing email chess.

I just can't see how it could possibly work for today's user - back in 1994 it would have been brilliant.

All seems very odd.

I think Conrad is more used to the German forum and misses all the little fights. But I am not so sure which sense the so called question really had. Spreading the disease?

My POV is that this is a community and supporting each other is important. It doesn't cost a thing to praise the work of another. Recognition is an important human need.

Hmm I think that gets me to 7 or 8 total posts!! Doesn't that get me a cookie or something?

Misdirected comments from a person more interested in fondling than photographing

I have to wonder if some people actually bothered reading what I actually wrote before stumbling over their own writing. I am flabergasted that someone I never had any dealings with, comments on how I am more used to the German forum (really! :D lol) and that I'm spreading its disease, and further comments as to whether my question was appropriate. I won't even bother with the other one who projected his personal drama onto this thread. This thing had taken a life of its own and it's totally hilarious. Al is right, this is better than a soap opera!:D

Hi Andy, William is right, the LUG is a mailing list not a forum. It also happens to contain the most talented group of photographers I've come across on the internet.

Yes there's a lot of off topic chat, yes there are some egos that don't get along, no I don't post much there,_but_ the photography is superb and every so long a thread comes along that really makes you thing differently about things.

Unfortunately, you have to kiss a lot of frogs and wade through a lot of treacle emails, to maybe find a link to a website that maybe contains some good photographs. It seems to me to be very hard work.

At least with a graphical based system, such as this, you can see whether you actually want to follow a link to someone's website, by the example they have posted.
