mhoutman Posted February 28, 2011 Share #1  Posted February 28, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Being absent for a while I am back again on the forum with a few questions on the X1.  My wife currently uses a D-Lux 4 and fell in love with the X1...in black of course  1) As the X1 has a bit bigger dimensions I would be interested to have a comparison on portability between the D-Lux's and X1.  2) She loves to takes snapshots everywhere. When would she go for a D-Lux 5 and when for a X1 ?  3) We have the lovely Artisan & Artist half-case for the D-Lux 4 (with handgrip). Is there a same model for the X1. (I only could find a A & A half case with integrated grip).  Thanks for your feedback.  Michiel
Advertisement Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Hi mhoutman, Take a look here X1 versus D-Lux 4/D-Lux 5. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Solar B Posted February 28, 2011 Share #2  Posted February 28, 2011 X1s are a wee big bigger than D-luxs if size is of a serious consideration  And yes you can get Artisan cases for them ... with or without Handgrip option.  I would recommend Luigis cases , but they are expensive.  Brian
wda Posted February 28, 2011 Share #3  Posted February 28, 2011 Being absent for a while I am back again on the forum with a few questions on the X1. My wife currently uses a D-Lux 4 and fell in love with the X1...in black of course ....  2) She loves to takes snapshots everywhere. When would she go for a D-Lux 5 and when for a X1 ?.... Michiel  Welcome back Michiel! I think the clue lies in the above quotation, "...She loves to takes snapshots everywhere..." As she is already familiar with the D-Lux 4, she would appreciate the extended zoom range of the D-Lux 5 together with other subtle improvements in image quality.  I have both cameras and use both cameras for different purposes. Both are superb, but the D-Lux 5 is rather more versatile (much better macro, for example). The X1 excels with image quality, but for snaps it may be overkill! Besides that It does not always suits me to take my M8 with lens (es) with me, so the X1 would be welcome for me too. Nice excuse to buy these goodies right ?  So now I have to find an Artisan & Artist black leather half case for X1 with hand grip......

Duke900 Posted March 1, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted March 1, 2011 I have D-LUX4 and X1, I agree with "wda". Â D-LUX is more versatile (Zoom, Macro, Better AF Tracking and Auto mode) X1 has far better image quality (Better Color and Dynamic Range, Lens Sharpness, etc.) and have Better Access to manual control (Aperture and Shutter Speed Wheel) However, D-LUX image quality is also very good. Â My suggestion would get X1 because you still have D-LUX4. You can enjoy both D-LUX4 and X1 at the same time. The X1 is light and small enough to carry around. Â If you get D-LUX5 it is just the same camera as D-LUX4 with some improvements.
DwF Posted March 1, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted March 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I find that my LX5 and X1 compliment one another really well, so I recommend you get the X1 and keep the D lux 4, unless you absolutley need the longer focal length of the DLux 5. But who among Leica shooters buys a camera for the longer focal length? Â David
mhoutman Posted March 1, 2011 Author Share #8 Â Posted March 1, 2011 Today I ordered in the Netherlands the X1 in black and the grip and bought an Artisan & Artist half case at Red Dot Camera's (Brian thx. for your excellent service). Â X1 is in back order at the importer's but we love to look forward to this amazing camera. At the time we get it it, it probably has the new firmware

You can rest easy in knowing that part of the charm of owning the X1 is "waiting for firmware" just like the Samuel Beckett play.  David
