elsdad Posted February 26, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am thinking of buying a Zeiss 50 mm 2.0 Planer lens. The shade seems to be an extra that mounts on the front. My question is: will the shade fit on the lens with a filter mounted or will I need to forgo the filter to mount the shade. Sorry if this has been asked before but I could not think of how to word the question as a search. Thanks

RobertJRB Posted February 26, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 26, 2011 The hood is attached by a bajonet fitting. The filters (at least my B+W's) fit when the hood is attached. However its a slim fit so big filters like an circl. Pola wont fit. You won't be able to turn the filter because the hood covers all the filters ring. elsdad Posted February 26, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted February 26, 2011 Thanks. I just want a protective skylight type filter. So the shade goes first and then the filter?
RobertJRB Posted February 27, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 27, 2011 Thanks. I just want a protective skylight type filter. So the shade goes first and then the filter? No, first the filter, and than the hood. The hood covers all the filter so you cant toutch it, or twist it. So if you want to remove the filter you first have to takeof the hood. lars_bergquist Posted February 27, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 27, 2011 The Zeiss/Cosina bayonet filter system is by far more practical than the screw-on system Leica are now introducing with many lenses. With a bayonet, a filter change is quick work. With a screw thread, it is infinite fiddling. A built-in, pull-out shade like on the 50mm Summilux ASPH is even faster of course – but that hood is so shallow that it protects the lens mainly against your greasy fingers. As a "shade" it is useless. The old man from the Age of the Bowler Hat Shade
wlaidlaw Posted February 27, 2011 Share #7 Posted February 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) You can always be a cheapskate and just buy a standard ventilated e43mm hood off eBay. Mine even says "For Leica" on it. Although it works just fine, admittedly it is not as good as the proper bayonet Zeiss hoods like the one I have for my 25 Biogon. Please note, if you buy Leica 43mm filters, the thread is different from the one on Zeiss lenses. Leica is 43 x 0.5mm. Zeiss lenses are 43 x 0.75mm. Keith (M) Posted February 27, 2011 Share #8 Posted February 27, 2011 The Zeiss lens hood I have is shared between the 50mm Planar and 35mm Biogon. A well designed and constructed device with minimal viewfinder blockage, but IMHO somewhat eye-wateringly expensive at £72 (GBP).
Xmas Posted February 27, 2011 Share #9 Posted February 27, 2011 Hi Well the Zeiss hood for the ZM 5cm Planar is the same as the CV hood for the 40mm f1.4 which might be cheaper, i.e. the hoods interchange on my lenses, andmy vernier callipers cannot detect any differences, the CV may be cheaper cause it does not have a Zeiss QA/warranty/support increment. (note the name plates are different.) The contemporary Leica hoods may be more expensive... Noel
