Hello Everybody,

Just wanted to let you all know my show "UNPOSED," based on the new book of the same name, is running for three more days at the Leica Gallery New York. Misha Erwitt, Elliott's son, is showing his work "Street Smart" there as well. With the exception of one photo, all of my pictures on display were shot with Leica M's:

Leica Camera AG - Culture - Gallery New York

Also, my new book "UNPOSED" is available on amazon or my personal website. It is published by teNeues, and the foreword is written by Elliott Erwitt. Every picture in the book was taken with a Leica M--most with film, though about 7 were with M8's or the M9.

I offer autographed copies on my website:

Thanks for looking and I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.

Cheers,

Craig

Allen--thanks for the positive review! I'm so glad you saw it and enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun putting those prints together. I appreciate your attendance and support--Thanks!

Lee--I'm sorry I waited so long to remind everyone! In fact, I don't know if I even mentioned that it was happening. Anyway, I'm glad you'll have time to get there. Just to clarify, though, the other show is the work of Misha Erwitt--Elliott's son. Elliott wrote the foreword for my book, "Unposed," and we did a book signing together at ICP in November, but Misha is the one showing at this particular exhibition. His work has a strong sense of humor running through it too--I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Enjoy!:)

Cheers,

Craig

Craig,

I'm very sorry that I missed your show. I tried! The only day that I had on my recent visit to NYC when I could get into Manhattan was Monday (Presidents' Day) and the Gallery is closed on Mondays.

Congrats on what sounds like a terrific show.

Hello Craig,

Sorry about the freudian slip. I guess it was on mind after reading Misha's NYTimes story recently.

I looked through the photos on your site and Leica's. I really enjoy them. I can't wait to see them in person.

Mark--Sorry! I know how frustrating that can be! Well, thanks for trying, and for the congrats. I don't know if you're going to be in LA in April/May, but it looks like I'll have the same show up here then. I'll make sure to post early on it.

Lee--no worries on the slip--after hanging out with Misha and his father for a while I know how easy it is to make a mistake. I called Misha Elliott once by accident--awkward! Yes, enjoy the show and please let me know what you think!

Cheers,

Craig

Hello Craig,

I loved the gallery and I think the pairing of your photos with Misha's was an excellent idea. Here were my notes after seeing your photos:

* edinburgh scotland, 2/25,*2 boys smoking*with clouds in background, one boy photographing

obviously 2 boys who want to be cool, but funny how one is photographing sunsets. i guess it is easy to get carried away in the moment even when you are a teenager and want to be so impressionable.

* edinburgh scotland 2005, man smoking out doorway

something very .... dare i say it.... artistic here. i don't think this would have worked with any other street or wall or doorway. it had to be this dated wall to really give it the same feel. and to me it feels something old and familiar. like an old steichen photo maybe.

* amsterdam 2001, couple kissing in front of monument

the youth are so oblivious of the past. and maybe rightfully so... i love how for one generation this means so much and the next it means so little.

* hollywood california, 3/35, african american lady laughing

some details are only seen in the physical world... and i liked the online photo of this, but the printed version is different. i really loved this photo. its uplifting to see. i dare you to view this photo while in bad spirits.

* paris 2006, 3/25, 2 boys standing on top of monument with their pants down

i love that they seem at first to be a part of the monument. i love that they dared to climb up and dared to strip down in a public way and very visible way. i like to think it was for the tourists... cause who else looks at these things?

* frankfort, ill, 2004, 2/25, balloons for sale with large lady

again, subtle. but the balloons and the flesh seem to be both one and hard to differentiate.*

* nyc 2006, 2/25, old lady sunny herself

this one i thought is dark humor.... the metal rails like bones and the real human bones all sunning themselves and possibly the same age.

* paris 2006, 4/12, man with paper towel in his nose

like misha's photo of the man in business suit walking with a surf board. this photo stands out... something about a man in a suit out of place is always humorous.

* los angeles 2003, 3/12, lady bending over cop car

i love the insinuation here... we don't know who this lady is or why she is talking to the police. but it is hollywood ... and the lady is shapely so i think back to 70's and 80's b-movies and my first thought is maybe she is a street walker... but it is hollywood and 2003 and maybe she's just a lady... talking to a cop.

* amsterdam 2003, 6/12, couple in front of painting, woman whispering in his ear

art inspires and here the art has maybe inspired this lady to say something to her man. i like to think she is teasing him for staring at the nudes. maybe cause my wife does the same...

Again, thank you for sharing the wonderful photographs and thank you for the reminder.

Wow, Lee, what an insightful email! It's always fascinating to hear the impressions of people viewing my work--it always informs me and often makes me look at a picture in a way I hadn't thought of before. Your observations are, as I said, insightful.

The shot of the businessman in the suit with the gauze up his nose is one of my favorites. So random. Technically, the shot is a testament to zone focusing. I had a 50 on the MP, saw a man in a suit approaching me with what appeared to be a tampon sticking out of his nose. This excited me:) I quickly set the shutter speed to 250 to stop action and metered a neutral area of grass to get the right f-stop, which happened to be 11, and set the focus at 10ft so that everything from approximately 7-15 would be in focus. I threw the camera up as we walked past each other and got off one shot. The whole thing was over almost as quick as it started.

I tell the story behind the couple kissing in front of the monument in Amsterdam on my blog:

The Story Behind The Picture Semetko

When I get more time, I'm going to write more of those stories behind the pictures--I try to impart lessons I've learned that might be helpful to others.

Thanks again, Lee, for taking the time to write so eloquently about your impressions of the show!

Cheers,

Craig
