Hi All,

Is there anywhere I can find pictures of Leica cameras and lenses to use on my blog? I'm looking for simple product pictures (on white background) like the ones you can find on the Leica website or Ken Rockwell's site.

The internet is full of pictures I like but copyrights are not clear.

Regards,

Christakis

Retailers honour copyright. They will have a marketing agreement with the equipment supplier and will be provided with, or licenced to use, images of the equipment in question. If they steal images - display them without consent - they are breaking the law.

Yeah, agree. I was hoping Leica had a source you could download pictures of their gear. I don't want it for blogging as such, I'm just creating a page with my equipment and thought it would be nice to put a couple of pictures too.

To be honest, was looking to save myself the trouble of taking them myself.

Have you considered writing to Leica and asking nicely if you can use their pictures? :)

Hi Nicole, yes I did. That's plan B. Plan A was ask here as there's many people who work closely with Leica and might have known the answer.

Worst case scenario (Plan E) is take them myself. :-)

Just find a nice picture, you want to use on the web, contact it's owner of copyright, ask nicely for permission to use on your blog, wait for permission, use picture on your blog within the limits of use, outlined by the owner of the copyrights of the image.

Sounds easy ;-)

Or … find someone with the gear, you want to show on your blog, ask, to come together and make your own product shots, the way, you want to present it - a great way, to spice up your product shot skills as well.

IMHO just use any suitable pictures (e.g. from Leica) and make sure to add a link to the original site (pictures taken from leica.com or whatever). I would be most surprised if that would not be deemed sufficient recognition of providence.

The legal aspects of internet are pretty much uncharted territory (as is being read by my wife at Leiden University, studying law & ICT). The main concern at present would be to act honorably. Using images with a linkback is fine IMHO, stealing & misinterpretation is not OK. Also the "economic impact" of use is relevant. Is a picture being used for a worldwide advertising campaign or by "joe the blogger"? Also artistic content would be a factor to take into consideration, is it a just a picture or a work of art?

I can name examples of stealing here but will refrain from doing so as I am not the police.

Thank you all for your replies. I went for the easy option for now and skipped the pictures all together :-)

I also sent Leica an e-mail to send me a couple of pictures which I can use. I don't see why they would say no, since it's free advertising for them.

If they do say "No", I'll just take my own pictures.

Regards,

Chris

If I were to use images not taken by me I would only do so after written permission from the author (or if the copyright disclaimer allowed it and was worded well enough so that it is clear I did not need to contact the author before using the image for x and y purpose).

IMO it doesn't matter how big or small a website is; it's all about making sure you don't upset anyone (aka risk a lawsuit). At the end of the day: it's making sure your back is clear.

If there is a obvious way of obtaining permission, sure that is the honorable way to do things. But...... internet has a tradition of being "out in the open".

Take the music business that has a really hard time in defining the boundaries of acceptable use, sharing etc. Who do you bring to court?:The user, the website host, the intermediate...? It really is not clear cut. There are nice examples where paying "per track" is unfair, e.g. with ambient LPs by Brian Eno with one track per side. Torrent sites, Russian mp3 hosts etc. it really is very hard to keep the bad guys out.

So acting honorably is the primary rule.
