M6 - what's the best view finder?

BlackDE

Recommended Posts

Hi, on ebay the M6 is available with 0.58, 0.72 or 0.85 view finders, with 0.85 being the most expensive. What is the difference?

Cheers,

Bernhard

...the numbers relate to the viewfinder magnification, and there is no such thing as "the best viewfinder" - it is simply a question of what suits your style. A quick use of the search facility threw up several threads on the same subject - this should help:

The .72 finder is the most common and most versatile, it depends on your personal preferences/useage.

True. With the .72, you get frame lines from 28mm to 135mm. This broad spectrum of coverage comes in handy.

Some who use mostly wide angle lenses prefer the .58 magnification, though.

Because of the increased effective measuring baselength, rangefinder focusing accuracy for all lenses is greater with the 0.85x finder--very useful for folks who work mainly with longer lenses.

Thank you very much, Ruben. This is great. It means, too, that when using a camera with an 0.85 viewfinder I could easily judge the frame size for a 28mm without an external viewfinder.

Bernhard,

Please don't make a mistake: the 28mm frame is NOT in the 0.85 viewfinder. If you prefer wide-angle lenses: buy a camera with the 0.58 viewfinder;

if you use wide-angle AND longer lenses: buy a camera with the 0.72 viewfinder; if you use 50mm and longer lenses: buy a camera with the 0.85 viewfinder.

I have a M6 0.85 with frames for 35/50/90/135mm mainly for a 50mm lens, and I have a M6 0.58 with frames for 28/35/50/90mm mainly for a 28mm lens.

Exactly for W.A. the 0,58 is the best and a RF is most acurate in the W.A. range. Also when you wear glasses the 0,58 can be prefered. But not if you have 90mm or more tele-lenses. Then the 0,85 is best fitting.

The 0,72 is the most universal.

BTW I am using an M7 0,58 with 15mm/external V.F. and 28mm, 50mm and 75mm. Not any problem and I like my Elmarit 2,8/28mm the best.

Hi Bernhard,

Sorry, as Frank mentioned, there are NO 28mm frame lines in a 0.85 viewfinder.

Here is the overview:

But Leica's possibilities are endless ....

With the LEICA VIEWFINDER MAGNIFIER M 1.25x

Have a look here:

I have the 0.58 because I like wide angle lenses and wear glasses.

Hope this is some help.

Kind regards,

Ruben
