75 cron vs lux

I will spend my 30% deal on the 28 Cron Asph. This is a fairly new lens which comes up for sale rarely, and it is very hard to get a good price on it. This is a lens which otherwise I would have trouble affording in the next few months. I thought about the Noctilux as well, but this also comes up on eBay from time to time, and has been around for a while. It generally sells for around €2000, I think, or a bit more, which is still lower than the 30% deal. I also prefer the previous version to the current one. The other choices at the higher prices are the Tri Elmars, but I am not so interested in those, due to the slow apertures and large sizes.

How big is the size difference between 'cron and 'lux in real life?

According Leica specs the 'lux has a largest diamater of 69mm, the 'cron of 58mm - 1cm diameter difference sounds like a lot.

And how much do the overlap with the viewfinder?

I want to keep the overall size/weight of my M8-setup compact. I value this as a key difference to my SLR setup (Canon 1D-II, several of the L primes, which are really huge for f-stops faster than 2.8).

Thanks for sharing,

Peter

I use the Summilux and handled a 75 Summicron on the M8 last weekend. The Summicron looks and handles significantly smaller, in addition it was very easy and silky smooth to focus compared to the 'lux. It's not so front heavy.

Carsten, you are right, almost all of them come up on eBay occasionally and the prices are generally lower than the discounted price. In fact I got my 28Cron ASPH that way. So I am not sure the discount is of that much value unless one really wants a brand new one.

However, I am curious which of the following lenses are newer - 35Lux ASPH, 50Lux ASPH, or 90 Cron APO. I already have these focal lengths in older versions. Indecisions, indecisions...

Regarding the design age of the 75 'cron and 'lux:

The Erwin Putz Lens Compendium lists only the 75 'lux - as a 1980 design.

Is it really that old? So if I pick up a mint used one say from '98, its still the most recent design.

The 75 'cron I can't find in his book, so it must be a very new design. Do you folks know when the 'cron was launched?

I see a very weird tendency .. people trying to maximise the rebate instead of looking for the lens they really need.

For now i came to the conclusin i do not NEED any new lenses ... and all lenses that i would LIKE to have .. can be bought cheaper 2nd hand LNIB.

Hope i keep my thoughts sane until june and the 30% offer is over ...and save me 70% :D

Well... I don't know what everyone else is doing, but I am getting the most expensive, hardest to get, lens of the ones I want but don't have. This is easy for me since I am starting from scratch with the M system. For people who have been around for a while, this makes less sense, and I would recommend to get the lens you always wanted, but couldn't afford.

It looks like the 75 Cron came out around May 2005.

Thanks !!!!

I did but not straight comparisons. I will try to post. I cannot do any more comparisons now. ALthough my 75 lux is back crom DAG I sent him my M8 with my 35 lux asph and my 28 cron and my 5D is in Canon for focus adjustment as well (preparations for a long summer...). I will try to post what I do have when I will find time for that.

I see this thread has popped back, so here's what I did with the which 75 question. First I got a great deal on a mint used 75 lux, which I absolutely love. A lifetime keeper. I was going to get a 50 lux with the discount, but used the $500 rebate from getting an M7 for this!. So, my discount is going to... the 75 cron asph. Just as I am glad to have a noct and 50 asph., I know I'll be using both 75's probably my favorite focal length. best...Peter

I sold my 75lux when my friend bought his 75cron. We were taking pictures and I kept thinking my lux is out of focus. Then I did backfocus tests and realized that both were focusing correctly. The 75lux just didn't match my other lenses, which is important to me when I'm shooting a project. Anybody who thinks the 75lux is sharp hasn't tried the 75cron. And yes, I compared them both at the same aperture (f 2) so there wouldn't be an unfair advantage for the cron.

It's been said before, but...sharpness isn't everything. The 50 noct is not sharp at 1.0. or particularly at 1.4. The 50 lux is the sharpest lens I've ever seen at 1.4. That wonderful term I only learned coming to Leica, that different lenses "draw" differently, is what I mean. There are portrait situations that I would always pick the 75 lux for. There are "tell it like it is" images that I'll use the 75 cron for. Indoor low light when 1.4 is needed- lux, general walk around when smaller size, fast focusing, and close focusing is needed- cron. Different tools. best...Peter

Yes, about 4 years ago I needed the 75 'Lux and couldn't find one anywhere. On the off chance I went into a Leica stockist near Trafalgar Square (think it was a deceased branch of Fox Talbot). To my suprise the assistant said they had a new boxed one in the stock room! at a very good price. He said it wouldn't sell because it was an "old design".

When I saw the lens I managed to stop myself from smiling and bought it. The only thing old about it is it's from the Leitz era and engraved appropriately..... A very fine lens :D and the case is very fine pigskin. :)
