viramati Posted February 16, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all I am after a reliable back up to the M9 (have 2) that would really only be used in an emergency. I already have the Konica Hexar RF which I love as a camera but I am worried about using it as a back up because of its electronics. I need something that doesn't rely on batteries (except for metering) so I'm thinking my cheapest option would be an M6 but am unsure which version to go for. Probably a classic as it will probably get little use. Any thoughts
Advertisement Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Hi viramati, Take a look here Back up to M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wildlightphoto Posted February 16, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 16, 2011 An M6 of some kind seems like a good choice, but the choice between classic or TTL might be swayed by the direction the shutter speed dial turns. I'd want my backup camera's operation to be as similar to the primary as possible.
earleygallery Posted February 17, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 17, 2011 David, You have two M9's? You want a backup for a backup? Why not just buy another charger and more batteries? What are the chances of both of your M9's failing on a shoot? If you want a mechanical film alternative to use alongside your M9's of course an M6 is a good choice, as is an M2, M3, M4, M4-p, M4-2, M5 (the M5 and 6's have built in meters). The thing is, film's a different medium so I don't see how it would work as just a backup.
wildlightphoto Posted February 17, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 17, 2011 You want a backup for a backup? I have 2 R8/DMR bodies and a pair of SL bodies as film backups. I sent one DMR to leica for service last year so an SL was designated first backup while the DMR was away.
viramati Posted February 17, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted February 17, 2011 thanks for thought.I actually tend to use both M9 at the same time with 28 on one and 50 on the other. It is just that I may be going to an area where getting power maybe difficult and so something mechanical may be useful. I take the point about the shutter speed dial difference between the TTL and classic models but I am thinking that as this may get very little use the classic can be found for less, have also considered an M3 or 4 as I do have an Old Gossen lunasixF light meter

Actually, the less you use your backup, having operations similar to your primary camera becomes more important! Guy
viramati Posted February 17, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted February 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Went today to look at some at Red Dot and think it will have to be the M6 TTL. As sh...t happens I dropped on of my M9's (while still in bag) and the rangefinder has gone out so I have had to get the Konica Hexar RF out. It really is a great camera what with top shutter speed of 1/4000s and auto etc pity that it relies so much on batteries
