james.liam Posted February 14, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Erwin Puts was kind enough to respond to an email I sent him asking this question and responded that they are optically identical except that v.2 will take the latest Leica 2x APO teleconverters. Can anyone else comment on this?
Advertisement Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Hi james.liam, Take a look here Question re: Leica R 180/2.8 APO v.1 vs v.2. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
glenerrolrd Posted February 14, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 14, 2011 Leica never formally established a new model for the 180/2.8 APO . I had to search for an old thread to find the starting serial number of the version that accepts both the 1.4X and 2x extenders. On the newer version the rear element is recessed to allow the extender to mount. I have the newer version and have found it superb on the R9/DMR . Very little loss in IQ with the 1.4X . At one point I had over 20 R lenses and the 180 /2.8 APO was one of a few I will not sell. I would remount this for Nikon if it could handle the extenders ...on Canon this would not be a problem using adapters .
james.liam Posted February 14, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted February 14, 2011 Thanks! This helps. I bought one some time ago (not knowing there were 2 versions) and when it arrived after a seemingly perpetual Leica CLA, it turned out to be a v.1 so I was concerned that it was not up to the famed optics of v.2; since the TC isn't on my list of things to get I shall content myself with this fine optic as is and go ahead with the Leitax conversion as planned. The first version is Leica item number 11273, while the new one is 11357 according to the wiki database this forum maintains. This is what my sample had on the box (white, not silver and black). According to the Leitax website, the 2x APO extender can be adapted but a custom Nikon mount has to be machined for it: APO-Extender 2x ROM The 1.4x APO appears straight-forward though: APO-Extender 1.4x
wizard Posted February 16, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 16, 2011 Erwin Puts ... responded that they are optically identical except that v.2 will take the latest Leica 2x APO teleconverters. Can anyone else comment on this? Actually, the 2x teleconverter is not the problem, they all fit the 180 APO lens. The problem was with the 1.4x converter. It protrudes into the back of the lens significantly, and the v.1 180 APO lens had its rearmost lens element at a position where it would collide with the optical system of the 1.4x converter, which is why v.1 180 APO lenses may not be used with the 1.4x converter. In the v.2 180 APO lens, the rearmost element was relocated farther into the lens, thus enabling the 1.4x converter to be used. Andy
james.liam Posted February 19, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted February 19, 2011 So....is the v.1 identical in to the v.2 in the way it renders subjects? I don't intend to use extenders and was hoping the two versions were equivalent otherwise. The famous Erwin Puts seems to be implying this. I take him at his eminently experienced word. Was wondering what the experience here has been....
