Dooglestar Posted February 9, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I'm using a Leica Summicron R 2/50: (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/50mm_f/2_Summicron-R_I) with a 7D and would like to use a fader ND filter though I'm having problems identifying the thread size. It says on that link 'Filter Size - Series 6'. Does anyone know what that is or the filter size of this lens is in mm so I can get step up rings for it? Thanks
Advertisement Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Hi Dooglestar, Take a look here Summicron R 2/50 Thread Size Question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Dooglestar Posted February 9, 2011 Author Share #2 Posted February 9, 2011 The bottom line is, I'd like to use an ND fader filter I have with this lens. The thread size of the filter is 77mm (I know, BIG) so I'm looking for a step up ring or a combination of step up rings to enable usage with this lens. I've been advised to get a Series VI to Series VII ring, use that with Series VII to 55mm then another step up ring to reach 77mm. It seems to be the only way to connect the dots... The problem is finding these particular rings. I can't find a Series VI ring anywhere! Any advice? Thanks
gyoung Posted February 9, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 9, 2011 This company has a large range of adaptors :- Camera Accessories,Digiscoping, scopes, binoculars although from a quick look, not the ones you want. They do a good quick job on special orders. Heliopan has an adaptor to put 55mm on Series VII, but I have been waiting for one from the UK importer since November, they may have something to help you. Gerry Thanks Gerry, I gave them a call and although they didn't have what I'm looking for they said they could custom make a 44mm to 77mm for £40. A bit steep, I thought, considering step-up rings usually go for around £3 - £8. Does 40 quid sound like a lot?

The difference is surely between automatic production on a computer controlled machine and setting up something from scratch. They recently did me a ring to attach an Elmarit 135/2.8 lens head to a BPM bellows unit for £35, which will do until I can find a 16462 focussing mount. Just think what it would cost if it had a Leica code on it! Gerry

Don't want to shell out then find the 40quid custom ring doesn't fit. I'd like to hear from someone that can confirm 44mm is the same as Summicron R 2/50 (first version, 1968) Series VI filter size. I'll hunt around a bit more and if nothing materialises I may pull the trigger on that one. Thanks.
tobey bilek Posted February 9, 2011 Share #7 Posted February 9, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) There was a hood and series VI ring supplied with the lens. They parted company along the way. Ser 6 are non threaded filters made to fit in a recess in the ring. If you must order something, get a UV filter for the lens as it was computed to use the glass in front. Strange but true. I tried many with and without. They always worked better with. Ser VI is not a common thread size, ie 42 or 44 mm, I forget now.

SRB have a good reputation, I'm sure they will get it right, or sort it out if not. Gerry
gyoung Posted February 10, 2011 Share #9 Posted February 10, 2011 Wikipedia has a page on series filters :- Photographic filter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia confirms that VI is 44mm, although they dont give the thread pitch, which I think is different to 'normal' filters Gerry
