Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. My replacement cover (grip-tek in gray from Camera Leathers) came in today and I think it took ten whole minutes to apply the covering. The fit was nice and the material is, well very grippy. The ugly duckling looks much better now.

Looks like new, they did a great job, . Personally I'm not so sure re the Grey colour but if you like it. I think it takes a few hours to take the old covering off and clean it down to the metal ready for the 2 minutes applying the new covering. Think how hard it is to peel old wall paper off or a label on a jar that doesn't want to come off, there are always small bits that won't come off easy and the surface is all sticky and dusty.

Thanks for posting the end of the story and a pic to show us the result.

Cheers, Lincoln

"They" just cut and sent the covering. "I" did the removal and re-covering. :) (repainted the back door as well. Total cost $30 us. Probably 1.5 hours in total time. The old stuff was pretty much ready to come off.

The gray is a personal thing. It's ok if it doesn't work for some eyes.

Lincoln I painted the back door black  before i decided to go with a gray covering. I masked off the vulcanite and carefully trimmed the overlaping tape with an exacto knife. I just used a high grade, off the shelf spray paint and it came out pretty good. I may though need to repaint it silver as I'm not quite sure I can live with the black.
