bill Posted February 7, 2011 Author Share #21 Posted February 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) We are, and that is something I never forget. But the Forum fills a large part of my own home; it is on in my office, and I can and regularly do bring it up on the TV in the lounge. It worked, visually and organisationally. It was straightforward. Now it doesn't. Now it isn't. And no, I have absolutely nothing in my house from Ikea. I refuse to be herded like a sheep around their warehouses, for their convenience not mine. The current changes trigger the same visceral reaction to having something unwanted and alien imposed. 30% of my screen real-estate is now filled, unwelcome and unwanted, with irrelevancies. Not happy. I need to walk away from this before I say something I will regret. Goodnight. Regards, Bill

I once had a bloke carry a large sized Billy bookshelf up 6 flights of stairs to my flat.

euston Posted February 8, 2011 Share #29 Posted February 8, 2011 Andreas, what did you make of your poll at http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/about-leica-forum/162477-beta-version-new-forum-start-page.html ? I notice from the results that fewer than a quarter of respondents liked the new layout and the majority of the rest positively disliked it. When it comes to design, polls don’t always help much, so I wouldn’t blame you for ignoring the outcome. A better measure of success is how much new traffic is being generated to the features that have been given greater prominence in the new design. How’s that working out?
LUF Admin Posted February 8, 2011 Share #30 Posted February 8, 2011 You are definitely right, design shouldn't be made as democratic process I started polls both in the English and the German forum and the outcome was very different. 47% disliked it in the International forum but only 27% in the German forum. Total number of participants were 80 members so the results are relevant but not really representative. By discussing the layout and the poll I try to get as much information as possible for the further development. I've understood that some members really dislike the additional information in the right column. On the other hand I've to oberserve current trends and platforms - and Twitter and Facebook are the most important of them. Last but not least the sponsor ads and the classifieds are main sources of the forum income. Inspired by Bill's complaint I'll offer another style without the "clutter" (his words) for sponsoring members. Andreas
pop Posted February 8, 2011 Share #31 Posted February 8, 2011 I would like to make two comments to this business. The forum's entry page already has several elements which can be turned off and on. I could live with turning off once in my life one or two additional elements. There are customers which will be sceptical of changes on principle. Even admins of forums in the internet must eat. Also, I would like to give thanks - once more - to Andreas for keeping this place in good order and thus providing a valuable resource for us all. bill Posted February 8, 2011 Author Share #32 Posted February 8, 2011 Andreas, thank you very much, your efforts are greatly appreciated. I know you cannot please all the people all the time! Pop is right - there are a number of elements that can be "compressed" on the home screen already; for example, the "Leica Products" bar isn't news to me so I keep it hidden. If these new "(anti-)social" elements can similarly be compressed, even if only for sponsoring members, I think it would be a massive step in the right direction. My main issue is the compression of true content over to the left, so anything that can be done to improve that would be most welcome. Finally, I would like to second Pop's thanks. I realise that it is at times a thankless task that you do, but it is appreciated by all concerned. Regards, Bill
LUF Admin Posted February 8, 2011 Share #33 Posted February 8, 2011 OK, here is the solution. After days and nights of research and programming I've created a new style available only to Sponsoring AKA Premium Members: In the drop down box at the left bottom of all pages premium members now can choose the "Premium - Plain Vanilla" style which hides the right column. @Bill - does that fit your needs? If you (existing or potential premium members) have more suggestions how to improve that style, please let me know. Andreas
andybarton Posted February 8, 2011 Share #34 Posted February 8, 2011 That style definitely works for me, Andreas. I can still see the Classifieds if I click on the tab at the top of course and, as a Twitter user, I get all your Tweets and RTs anyway. Thanks very much

Doc Henry Posted February 8, 2011 Share #37 Posted February 8, 2011 "47% disliked it in the International forum but only 27% in the German forum". Hi Andreas, ... I am part of the 73% of people on the German forum ! It not bothers me at all, i find it's more alive to have the current interventions and constantly updated. These are "hot"interventions as you have marked ! Bravo for this initiative ! Regards Henry
pico Posted February 8, 2011 Share #38 Posted February 8, 2011 Thank you, Andreas. Being able to turn off the right column is handy on the Mac Air. At work I have a 30" monitor so I can turn it on there. Very nice option!
Bo_Lorentzen Posted February 9, 2011 Share #39 Posted February 9, 2011 Andreas, Now that we are talking about premium members for a moment, just wanted to bring up my mailbox, it need a fix, Im thinking there really need to be a "really nuts pemium member" level.. charge me a bit extra and toss a much bigger mailbox/messages storage at me. At the moment I feel just as unsettled as Bill did, but seeing the "Your PM box is 96% full" message. :-D I'm sure there must be a simple paypal based solution for this error message.
