barn door lens hood

The folding "barn door" hoods were made for the screw-mount Summitar and 50mm Summicron. They'll fit any 50mm Summicron that doesn't have a built-in hood. The angles and the cut-outs in the back of the hood were designed to minimise viewfinder intrusion on screw-mount bodies so aren't optimal for use on an M, but I find it quite usable.

There may possibly be complications if you have a filter on the lens. I'm pretty sure the later barn doors - the ones marked "Summicron" will fit over a Leitz/Leica E39 filter all right, but I'm not certain that the older ones - marked "Summitar" only - will do so.

I find I can also use my barn door hood on a 35mm Summicron pre-asph on the M8 with lots of shading and no vignetting.

Summitars had a V groove to hold the shade. I imagine the tabs were made to fit the V.

I imagine it would also fit the Summicrons with flat bottom groove, bit would be sloppy. So try before you buy.

A wild guess is Summitar/Summicron marked are made for a flat bottom groove.

Yes, the barn door hood with no clamping screw was made with springs to catch into the flat bottom groove of Summitar and Summicron (SOOPD last version, which bears the name "Summitar" or "Summitar - Summicron"); SOOFM is practically identical to this last SOOPD, apart that it bears only the "Summicron" name : that's the reason why I thought it couldn't fit the (ungrooved) V3 Summicron 50... but from what Giordano wrote seems that it can fit into.

Was curious to know... so I tried them

the Summitar obviously do not fit

the two versions Summicron and Summitar u.Summicron fit, BUT do not clamp safely, by this I mean that, if you move it, it comes out.

So I will not recommend to use it without a special care.

The groove on V.3 lens head is the double in width than of the V.2. may be this is the cause of the floppy clamp.
