Pop up ad

Hi,

we are testing a cooperation with a new advertiser - including popups.

They assured us that users will receive only one popup per day - I'm not sure if this runs correctly now...

Please give us some days to test and optimize, we try to find out if the annoyance-income-relation is OK.

I've had several different German popups today. The latest being this one. How is the one per day controlled? cookies or by IP address? I automatically delete cookies after each browsing session. My IP address is static for months if not years but what happens with people whose addresses are dynamically allocated everytime they connect?

I'll be patient and see what happens as the bugs are ironed out :).

Bob.

Cookies, I'm afraid...

PS.: Disclosure - This is my (admin's) test account as premium member. BTW - Sponsor ads in the new design are gone for premium members.

I am getting the popups too, they are most annoying.

As to once a day, great for people who save cookies.. doesn't work with those of us (many on the internet) who do not due to moving between machines, concerns about security, and who don't like advertising tracking.

I'm sure I can block it somehow, but I personally find it very annoying... apparently I'm not alone as there was already a thread on it when I came to look.

Sponsor the forum and all the ads go away.

Accept cookies and the pop up comes only once per day.

Refuse cookies and pay nothing and they might come along more often.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

This place costs money to host and is free for anyone to use and benefit from. Moderators are unpaid volunteers of course, but the hosting is significant. Ads or sponsorship are fair enough.

...or recognize that popups are not effective for advertisement and that users will install simple things (which took about 30 seconds to figure out, and now block all ads from the site) to be rid of them.

I get the place costs money, but intrusive popups are not an answer. Previously there were no issues with ads and were I to see something relevant I would use a sponsored link. The solution to popups removes any ads from showing on the page.

I am quite clear that to you I never have anything of value to offer. That said, other users already don't like this - and in the end the solution to the super intrusive popup/under ads simply blocks all site advertising.

I'd love to see if anyone actually buys anything from this popup experiment, I doubt it.

Ads are fine - hijacking my browser is not.

But again, given your clear close-mindedness on anything I ever say, I wouldn't expect any other answer.

They don't, quite. There are several scenarios where you get them anyway. Firefox, for instance, seems to have a bug which makes the popup appear from time to time even if it's set to not show any popups.

Do you sponsor the forum? If you do, the ads are switched off.

For several reasons, I do not remain logged in. The popups are shown until I log in. As soon as I'm logged in, it appears that they don't pop up, any more.

Well, it's not a major problem. It is a bit annoying because some manage to pop even with the pop ups disabled. Might be a Firefox issue, though.
