earful Posted February 1, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted February 1, 2011 i just ordered one of these using ebay bucks, so in a way it was free (given that i can't use ebay bucks anywhere else and nothing else is on my buy list before the expiration date). less concerned about losing the lens cap than protecting the lens while walking my dog and having the camera available for use at all times. agree that it's ugly, but not as ugly as the adapter people are using to attach filters and hoods to the x1. Archiver Posted February 12, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted February 12, 2011 It's a functional copy of the auto lens cap for the Ricoh GX100/200, and now widely used as a third party accessory for the LX3, Sigma DP1 and DP2, and now the X1. I have the JJC lens caps for my Sigma cameras, and despite their strange looks they work very well. The lens is protected and yet remains instantly accessible with one hand operation, and protrudes much less than any filter tube adapter. Archiver Posted February 12, 2011 Share #11  Posted February 12, 2011 The blades are light, but the springs are a sufficient balance of firmness to keep them retracted when not in use, but light enough to not impede the lens barrel.  I don't consider them very flimsy at all. I am confident in putting my camera with lens cap in a bag with other loose items or in a pocket. Obviously they won't stand up to a hearty jab but they will protect the lens from fingers and similar things  Dust or water can enter the front between the gaps, which makes a normal cap better for overall protection. Â The nice thing about the auto lens cap is that it frees the camera to be used at any moment with one hand. You can start and shoot in a couple of seconds even if your other hand is occupied or you're just feeling a bit lazy. I prefer to keep my lenses protected between uses; I know someone who never uses lens caps but never uses filters either, but I'm not that game. Â Another company, Acmaxx, make a purportedly high quality UV filter with an adhesive ring that sticks directly on to the lens barrel, covering the front lens element and acting as a lens protector of sorts. earful Posted February 12, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted February 12, 2011 my freebie lens cap arrived and it does work - although it's a bit disconcerting to look through the viewfinder and see the edge of one of the flaps appearing to intrude into the frame. doesn't really, though. Â i wouldn't like to crash anything into the flaps - i agree they are nowhere near as stable as the regular cap and a solid crash would probably drive them into the lens when it is retracted. since, however, i tend to walk my dog, shoot one-handed, and would leave the regular cap off the whole time anyway, this still makes more sense for me. Mine is model JJC ALC-X1. The item is well made, and opens as advertised, but the flash obscuration is a deal-breaker for me. I can post images if anyone wishes to see. Â Back to using my cap leash. And it works with the Leica leather case too. Open and close the case with the auto cap on without any problems. Â Although it looks not so good, I feel better and convenient.
