jsrockit Posted January 31, 2011 Share #21 Posted January 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know there will be howls of protest about people pictures, but I have used slower cameras in the past to good effect. Are you sure you used cameras slower than the X1? Do not underestimate its slowness... it is the slowest AF camera I've ever used.
Advertisement Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Hi jsrockit, Take a look here Ultimate pocket camera: X1 vs Nex vs S95 vs DP2S vs Oly vs Panny vs Fuji. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted January 31, 2011 Share #22 Posted January 31, 2011 ... The AF on the X1 necessitates me having the same focal length on my M8. The M8 is a fast camera that can zone focus easily... it is a true "street" camera, the X1 is not. ..... JS, unless I have misunderstood you, are you saying that you depend on your M8 to guarantee focusing accuracy when using your X1? In other words, you must take your M8 even though you intend using your X1? If so, your experience is contrary to mine. The whole point in taking both cameras is to give me quick alternative focal lengths in the field, (or street). Often I carry just my X1, accepting its fixed lens limitations, and experience dependable focusing accuracy through all available focusing modes. jsrockit Posted January 31, 2011 Share #23 Posted January 31, 2011 JS, unless I have misunderstood you, are you saying that you depend on your M8 to guarantee focusing accuracy when using your X1? In other words, you must take your M8 even though you intend using your X1? You misunderstood me. I could never rely on my X1 as my only 35mm equivelent camera because it is too damn slow. Therefore, I need to have a 35mm equiv on my M8 for the times I want to be fast i.e. zone focus situations that change often. That said, I have used my X1 and M8 at the same time with the same lens equiv. Why? Because I prefer my M8 for street (where the X1's AF is too damn slow) and I prefer my X1's LCD accuracy for still lifes, etc.
phancj Posted February 1, 2011 Share #24 Posted February 1, 2011 colonel, From what you described i think the X1 will do okay. Fwiw i brought the X1 to a Indian street market and in 40 min or so snapped close to 200 photos. What I consider to be nice photos too!
h00ligan Posted February 1, 2011 Share #25 Posted February 1, 2011 JS - why not zf the x1? Should work just about as well as the m8? What's the shutter lag difference?
jsrockit Posted February 1, 2011 Share #26 Posted February 1, 2011 JS - why not zf the x1? Should work just about as well as the m8? What's the shutter lag difference? I refuse to zone focus a camera without a proprer depth of field scale (not to mention that shitty wheel on the back of the X1)... to me, that isn't as easy as an M8 at all. The X1 should just have proper AF in the first place. Plus, you guys have to understand that there is something special to an M for those of us who love manual rangefinders... cameras like the X1 will never replace that feeling (even if properly implemented). You can guess focus on an M8 by feel... you'll never do that on the X1.
Ecaton Posted February 1, 2011 Share #27 Posted February 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) JS - why not zf the x1? Should work just about as well as the m8? What's the shutter lag difference? Besides not having a depth of field scale, looking at the lcd screen to set the estimated distance slows down any MF process. And lastly, that flimsy wheel with which one sets the distance seems to have a life on its own and move upon the slightest touch. So a constant checking of the distance set is unavoidable, via lcd screen again. In short, with the X1 the centre of the attention becomes the camera, with the M, the photographers surroundings. A huge difference.
h00ligan Posted February 1, 2011 Share #28 Posted February 1, 2011 I hear you. I'm still considering the options at this point.. and would like to move to RF. I have to examine euro and used prices for m9, or see where the m8 is. The downside to m8 (which would otherwise suit me great) seems to be high iso.. and I shoot a fair amount in low(er) light
grober Posted February 2, 2011 Share #29 Posted February 2, 2011 Colonel, I've been loyal to the brand for over 40 years but my X1 sits on the shelf until firmware 2.0 can be downloaded and tested. The camera is just too bloody slow! The X1 belies everything baked into the seven different Leica-M bodies I have owned: each was facile to use, an automatic extension of my arm that came naturally to eye, delivering killer results after the film/image was processed. (One of my Ms was an early M8.) The X1 was purchased last year with high hopes but has yet to deliver. -g

However, buy some fast lenses and do low light photography the old fashioned way!
colonel Posted February 3, 2011 Author Share #31 Posted February 3, 2011 Guys, thanks for all your input. I decided not to get the X1. I have played with it a number of times now and decided to get something else (I will not say what it is so as not to cause an argument). I do want to try leica, and it seems a 2nd hand M8 will be the way to go. Goodluck with your firmware upgrade !

h00ligan Posted February 3, 2011 Share #33 Posted February 3, 2011 Was it a NEX, GF2/EPL2, or a place in line for the x1000 cmon, spill it! I don't think anyone is going to 'argue'.. well maybe.. but there shouldn't be... good that you found something to fit your needs!
h00ligan Posted February 3, 2011 Share #34 Posted February 3, 2011 Well, honestly, it appears the M9 doesn't have great high ISO either. However, buy some fast lenses and do low light photography the old fashioned way! Every time I get ready to sell the x1, I make (what is for me) a great image and I think.. DAMNIT.. I HATE to say things like 'there's something about it' but even being frustrated, the lens characteristics are unique. It is a completely different look than any other camera.. even one that may be sharper, more contrasty, etc.. So I sit waiting for now!

I don't think anyone is going to 'argue'.. well maybe.. but there shouldn't be... good that you found something to fit your needs! Sony NEX-5. I bought a NEX-5, 18-55mm zoom, sony ea1 adaptor, sony 50mm f1.8 lens, voigtlander E-VM adapter, voigtlander 35mm f1.4. All that stuff was 2/3s of the X1's price. Only taken a few pics so far with the zoom, but am pleasantly surprised, especially with firmware v3. I have alot to play with now .....

nigelb Posted February 5, 2011 Share #38 Posted February 5, 2011 Well just picked up a Nex 3 today, having dismissed it a while ago along with micro 4/3 (2x crop too much for my liking). Got fed up with waiting for a camera on which I could use my collection of Voigtlander lenses that wouldn't break the bank. Visited one of my local camera shops today and found a new Nex 3 body for £170 so grabbed it . My Voigtlander lenses will give 24, 40, 55 and 80mm on the Nex so should work out OK. Just waiting now for my 39mm to E-mount adapter which should arrive late next week before I can try it out. I'm expecting to have to use Cornerfix with the 15mm Heliar. phancj Posted February 5, 2011 Share #39 Posted February 5, 2011 Nigel, You should post some photos, I am very curious on how the CV lenses will do on the nex. Altho I very much prefer AF lenses which sony promised with Carl Zeiss E-mounts. CJ
nigelb Posted February 5, 2011 Share #40 Posted February 5, 2011 Yeah I'm curious too. It's a bit of an experiment which I hope will work out, seems like a good way to utilise these lovely lenses. Just got to wait for my adapter to arrive. If it doesn't work out for me I'll sell the body on, I won't lose money. Manual focussing is no problem to me. With DOF scale markings on the lenses, makes zone focussing a doddle and will give me something the X1 can't do right now. I'll report findings here.
