Digilux2 vs. D-Lux 5: How does IQ Stack Up?

Sorry, title probably should have read "D2" - I'm referring to Digilux 2.

I've read many postings over the years wishing for a more up to date sensor for the D2.

I'm wondering if anyone who has used both the D2 and the D-Lux 5 has an opinion on how they compare for capturing printable images? How do more pixels on a more modern sensor on the D-Lux 5 end up comparing with fewer pixels and a better lens on the D2 when it comes to images for printing?

Thanks in advance for any and all opinions!

Mod Note: I have edited the thread title for you.

Don´t really know about the DL5, but I own both a D2 and a DL4, and the IQ of the D2 is markedly superior, as long as it is shot at ISO 100. A3 size prints is no problem, but obviously there´s not much room for cropping then.

And the ergonomy is worlds apart!

Don´t take the comments about ´up-to-date-sensors´ too seriously! The original D2 sensor does a great job as it is; the weakest point is the raw write speed. But then, few cameras give as good jpeg´s right out of the camera.

BRMatthews, welcome to the forum!

I have both cameras and continue to enjoy both cameras. The younger one tends to roam more for personal photography because of the higher resolution and image stabilization. But - the D2 gives me far more pleasure to use.

I don't print beyond A4 where the results are very similar. But, when still allowed for stock purposes, a few of my D2 pictures still sell globally which indicates that clients still find the results acceptable. I am sure that if the D2 was equipped with a bigger sensor it would be superior, but that is 'pipe-dreaming'!

Basically, both cameras are highly competent in their fields.

Thanks to both of you for your opinions!

I realize now how my expectations for digital have shifted in the past 5 years. I shot a lot of 35mm ASA100 film over the years, and was content to get a decent-looking 8x10 if I lucked into a good shot. The D2 gives me that and then some!

I find the Digilux 2 much more comfortable to use, but I think my D-Lux 4 (I don't have the D-Lux 5) outperforms it a bit.

I have a tremor and the D-Lux's image stabilization is a plus for me.

They are similar, but IMHO the D-Lux has an edge over the Digilux.

Also, I shoot just about exclusively RAW with the two, and the Digilux 2 is much slower in that mode. I know, the cognoscenti say both do great JPGs and that I shouldn't be wasting time with their RAW idiosyncracies. But at least I feel pure (if slow). :)

Welcome to the forum, BR. I can't believe you've so far got only three responses to a very reasonable question. :(
