Pecole Posted January 27, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 27, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) A first, limited batch of Leica R3 was manufactured in Wetzlar before the production line was transferred to the Famalicao facility, in Portugal. Serial sequence for the R3 is said to start at 1446001. and all authors (Laney, Lager...) agree to say that only some very first models (Laney suggests 2,000) are engraved "Germany". We had both the black and the chrome "Germany" versions in our Fontenelle collection, but both serials were quite far from the initial one and, more surprisingly, were only 23 digits from each other : 1450456 for the chrome, 1450479 for the black. Another evidence that Leitz serial numbers never were attributed in a systematical, strictly sequential and timely way.
