Making special edition cameras has nothing whatsoever to do with firmware updates.

Except that it "absorbs" Leica workers/managers time, something which is allegedly scarce these days . You may reply that the two are done by different parts of the organization, and I might partly agree to that. But that is not my point.

No it doesn't. Engraving "BMW" on the top and choosing a different colour leatherette, does not stop someone working on the firmware. I bet the firmware isn't even being worked upon in the same factory, or even the same country. That could be being done anywhere on the planet.

So. This special edition is just the latest in a long line of cameras with Leica squeezing more money out of people who like this sort of thing and it doesn't distract one iota from the firmware writers. If it absorbs someone's time, it is someone in marketing.

When my dad worked in Q/C at Goodyear, they had a running joke about how they would have to test the quality into the product, since they weren't likely to build it in. Methinks Leica is going this route, hoping for a lucky break. Getting a good programmer is very difficult. Those companies who have them and pay them well don't appreciate them, and those who don't have them and wish to hire don't know how to evaluate them, or they poison the relationship with existing employees who are jealous of new talent.

I have some laser engraving machines and if I change the vulcanite and engrave my own stuff will it void the warranty? You reckon? :D

I can then make everyone's X1 limited edition haha....

Aren't you the guy working on the firmware update? Get back to work.

Some members appear to think that its firewall is dated and needs updating.

...thanks, Philipp. Is the onus on Leica to update such firmware, and if so, how long will this obligation subsist? My assumption here is that the camera already functions "as described".

There is no obligation on Leica to update the firmware at all. However, we do know that they are working on it and it will be released to owners when it has been properly tested and is ready.

...sounds like Ecaton is of a contrary opinion, Andy. Where do these expectations come from? And I'm not being funny (or facetious)?
