Ecaton Posted January 24, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted January 24, 2011 Making special edition cameras has nothing whatsoever to do with firmware updates. Except that it "absorbs" Leica workers/managers time, something which is allegedly scarce these days . You may reply that the two are done by different parts of the organization, and I might partly agree to that. But that is not my point.
andybarton Posted January 24, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 24, 2011 No it doesn't. Engraving "BMW" on the top and choosing a different colour leatherette, does not stop someone working on the firmware. I bet the firmware isn't even being worked upon in the same factory, or even the same country. That could be being done anywhere on the planet. So. This special edition is just the latest in a long line of cameras with Leica squeezing more money out of people who like this sort of thing and it doesn't distract one iota from the firmware writers. If it absorbs someone's time, it is someone in marketing.
pop Posted January 24, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 24, 2011 But that is not my point. Please pardon me for asking, but what is your point? I seem to be unable to see the issue.
Dan States Posted January 24, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 24, 2011 By this logic they should also stop cleaning the restrooms at the factory until the firmware update is complete.

grober Posted January 25, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 25, 2011 The bloody camera is so slow to use it will sit on the shelf until 2.0 can be loaded. Come on Leica, get on the stick and release the new firmware! -g
Guest badbob Posted January 25, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 25, 2011 When my dad worked in Q/C at Goodyear, they had a running joke about how they would have to test the quality into the product, since they weren't likely to build it in. Methinks Leica is going this route, hoping for a lucky break. Getting a good programmer is very difficult. Those companies who have them and pay them well don't appreciate them, and those who don't have them and wish to hire don't know how to evaluate them, or they poison the relationship with existing employees who are jealous of new talent. phancj Posted January 25, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 25, 2011 I have some laser engraving machines and if I change the vulcanite and engrave my own stuff will it void the warranty? You reckon? I can then make everyone's X1 limited edition haha....

h00ligan Posted January 25, 2011 Share #12 Posted January 25, 2011 Fire the engravers and leatherette seaports and hire another software developer. :/

earleygallery Posted January 25, 2011 Share #14 Posted January 25, 2011 That's got to be the most un-special special edition ever! Probably took someone all of 10 minutes, and yes, now that same person is back looking at the firmware file on his desk. Uh oh, how dare they, I think he's allowed lunch breaks! pop Posted January 25, 2011 Share #16 Posted January 25, 2011 What is wrong with it? Some members appear to think that its firewall is dated and needs updating.
spylaw4 Posted January 25, 2011 Share #17 Posted January 25, 2011 The bloody camera is so slow to use it will sit on the shelf until 2.0 can be loaded. <snip>-g Nonsense! But that does not mean that a firmware update would not be welcome.
aesop Posted January 25, 2011 Share #18 Posted January 25, 2011 Some members appear to think that its firewall is dated and needs updating. ...thanks, Philipp. Is the onus on Leica to update such firmware, and if so, how long will this obligation subsist? My assumption here is that the camera already functions "as described".
andybarton Posted January 25, 2011 Share #19 Posted January 25, 2011 There is no obligation on Leica to update the firmware at all. However, we do know that they are working on it and it will be released to owners when it has been properly tested and is ready.

Where do these expectations come from? And I'm not being funny (or facetious)?
