jackal Posted January 24, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is this a holy grail combination ? I shoot M9 now and find a 24mm on that to be too wide and not much use sadly. But I used to love my 24 F/2.8 on my M8. It had an almost ideal close to 35mm frame of view but a more dramatic 24mm perspective and the wonderful rendition of the 24 elmarit at 2.8. I found that lens had a quality that was special in its own right, arguably more beautiful than the 35 lux or the 28 cron. So the question is, does anyone use the new 24 lux on the M8. I would imagine this would be a once and for all setup, a wonderful combination providing you don't need to enlarge too much. I'd be grateful for any samples .. I am thinking fo buying another M8 again specifically to use this combo.
Advertisement Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Hi jackal, Take a look here 24 Summilux on an M8 ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted January 24, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 24, 2011 Excellent combo -used to use it a lot.But what is stopping you from cropping your M9 images by 1.33x?
01af Posted January 24, 2011 Share #3 Posted January 24, 2011 ... I used to love my 24 mm 1:2.8 on my M8. It had an almost ideal close to 35 mm frame of view but a more dramatic 24 mm perspective ... Hopefully you don't really believe that a 24 mm lens on an M8 would give you the same field-of-view as but a different perspective than a 35 mm lens on an M9, do you!? I am thinking fo buying another M8 again specifically to use this combo. That would be a pointless thing to do—unless you needed or wanted an M8 for other reasons also. On the M9, a 24 mm lens brings up the 35-mm framelines anyway so why don't you simply use the Summilux-M 24 mm Asph on your M9 pretending it was a 35 mm lens? When cropping down the images to M8 format (as Jaap already has suggested above) then you'll get just the same result—in terms of angle-of-view, field-of-view, perspective, and resolution—as you would with the same lens on an M8. Rather than purchasing an M8 body for the Summilux-M 24 mm Asph I'd strongly suggest to buy a 35 mm lens for the M9.
jackal Posted January 24, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted January 24, 2011 good point although i could do with a backup M and two M9's would be hugely expensive for a body that rarely gets used none of my digital M's have ever let me down on any shoots but that day might comes
shootinglulu Posted January 24, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 24, 2011 There is something wonderful about the 24luxM8 combo that the 35luxM9 combo doesn't match..for me anyway. I love the 24luxM8 here.. Flickr: Superbaka's Photostream
vickko Posted January 24, 2011 Share #6 Posted January 24, 2011 When I had the M8, I loved the combination with the 24mm, especially since it had the built in frameline. I now have the M9, and will have to use a finder, but I'll still look forward to using the lens, at its native focal length. Vick
falkk Posted January 31, 2011 Share #7 Posted January 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there - I am looking forward to get a M9 with a 24-Summilux. Now I am confused: Why does the 24-lux brings up the 35mm framelines in the M9? And about Viewfinder? Do I need that? I thought, I get a M9 and just put on the 24-lux and have a perfect combo. I have the Frankenfinder for my WATE, and honestly, it is a good piece of machinery, but i'd prefer not to have to use this thing. falk
ezc203 Posted February 11, 2011 Share #8 Posted February 11, 2011 The 24 Lux is almost always glued to my M8. It is my favorite combination to shoot with, since the M8 conveniently have the 24mm frame-lines built in. The only reason I would not consider it the "holy grail" is because when comparing the M8+24Lux vs M9+35Lux; the M9+35Lux wins out easily (in my opinion). a) size, form, and balance - love the 24 Lux, but it is big. depths of field - although the bokeh of the 24 Lux is phenomenal, the 35 focal length gives you a shallower dof c) M9 resolution over M8 (I make a lot of large 30x20 and larger prints - you can really see the difference) That said, due to monetary restraints, I am happily settling with my M8 + 24 Lux. And I use the term "settling" very very loosely. Now if only my baby M8 can come back from Allendale soon!
ezc203 Posted February 11, 2011 Share #9 Posted February 11, 2011 And since you asked for samples, I'm never one to shy away from an opportunity to post pictures There are more examples on my blog, but you'd have to do a little snooping, because I don't organize by equipment. ho_co Posted February 11, 2011 Share #10 Posted February 11, 2011 ... Why does the 24-lux brings up the 35mm framelines in the M9? ... Since the M8 doesn't offer 135mm framelines, Leica chose to put its 24mm frameset on the same tab as the 35mm framelines. ... And about Viewfinder? Do I need that? I thought, I get a M9 and just put on the 24-lux and have a perfect combo.... The M9 doesn't have 24mm framelines. It was barely possible with the M8 only because of its reduced field of view. ... I have the Frankenfinder for my WATE, ... but i'd prefer not to have to use this thing. Other options include: the standard Leica M 24mm finder (Leica Camera AG - Photography - LEICA VIEWFINDER M for 18, 21 & 24 mm lenses) the Leica 24mm finder made for the D-Lux 4 (Leica Camera AG - Photography - LEICA D-LUX 4 BRILLIANT VIEWFINDER) the older Leica 21-24-28 finder (Leica Camera AG - Photography - LEICA VIEWFINDER FOR 21/24/28 mm LENSES ) the Panasonic 24mm finder made for the DMC-LX3 one of the Zeiss or Voigtländer finders
falkk Posted February 16, 2011 Share #11 Posted February 16, 2011 Hi Howard, thanks for the comments... Anyway, that will not prevent me from getting a M9... But as I see from Eddies examples up there - the lens on the M8 works just beautiful. Portrait shots with the 24mm very nice! Falk
