M8 off to Solms . . .

I have just sent my M8 off to Solms because of a red-line problem that's recently appeared at ISO 640 and above. It's under the shop warranty that it came with.

I had assumed that it would be getting a new sensor but I've been reading that sometimes they just `Map` the sensor. Does anyone know what this is and is it a permanent repair or does it just mask the problem?

If one pixel goes up the swanny, is it likely more will do the same?

Missing the camera already:(

Depends - sometimes it is mapped out, sometimes a new sensor is needed. Solms will do what is needed. Mapping out dead pixels in software -the interpolating of a value for that pixel from the neighboring pixels- has to be done with all (new) sensors, as no sensor has a 100% score in functioning pixels. So a remap may well be possible. But if that would take the sensor out of the tolerances in this respect, it will be replaced.

The problem is haphazard. You may see it again sometime, or never...

Thanks Jaapv. I suppose one way or another the fault will be fixed??

Do you think I will receive an extra 1 year warranty on the whole camera or just the repair work?

Mine just came back last week after having a new circuit board installed under warranty. No mention of an extended warranty.

How long was the Camera away for?

Neither. You're still under the camera's original warranty. Leica extends a one-year warranty on the entire camera for billable repairs only.

Some cameras--late Nikon models and the Leica S2, for example--allow you to map out bad pixels at home. It's a standard procedure for fixing both hot and dead pixels. You'll never know something has been fixed.

Hi Ho_Co.

The original factory warranty expired sometime ago. It only has a 6 month warranty from the camera shop, so would this make any difference?

Only when you send the camera in for repair after it has passed it's normal warranty period and you pay for the repairs done. As it is now it is still under warranty. The only difference was with the upgrade program for the M8. If you sent it in for any of the upgrades Leica extended the warranty by one year or gave you a one year warranty if the camera was out of it's normal warranty period. But then you were paying for the upgrade.

Yes. Did you take it back to the dealer you bought it from and did they send it in to Leica?

If you sent it in yourself then Leica will charge you, or should I say TRY to charge you.

In any event this line problem is a known flaw in the camera and should be fixed free of charge.

If you took it back to the dealer then they should pay for the repair as per there warranty with you.

Leica did not give you the store warranty. The store did.

Oops, sorry, Ming. :o

In this case, the only thing to do is find out from the dealer who's handling the transaction. :(

As Ed and I said, all billable work done by Leica usually comes with a one-year warranty on the whole body or lens or whatever.

Your camera may just need pixel-mapping, and I don't know how (or whether) Leica charges for that.

A "dealer warranty" usually depends on the dealer's good will: "I am willing to bet that this camera is free of defects for X amount of time." So if Leica were to charge the dealer, you would likely not find out what he paid.

My guess is that this is likely just a pixel-mapping procedure handled without disassembly of the camera at low or no charge. If that's so, there'll be no extension of the warranty. I can think of other scenarios, but at the moment, the best bet is probably just to settle in till the dealer reports back.

BTW, if I'm right in what I think the problem is, I wouldn't call it a "known flaw in the camera." I'd say rather that it's a typical problem of most sensors. In many later designs (Leica S2 for example), the manufacturers make it possible to map out the error with software built into the camera. But I'm only guessing; until your dealer hears from Leica, we won't know for sure.

Whatever happens, do keep us posted!

Cheers for all the tips and help guys.

I sent the camera to the dealer I bought it from and they have examined it and said "we will have this repaired for you". So sounds promising.

Bloody annoying really as I'm just about to start a 10 week Intermediate Photoshop Course.

I shall wait (impatiently) for the next installment and keep you all up to speed.

Well, here we are nearly a month later and no word from the camera shop or Leica about my camera. I don't like to pester people, so was wondering whether I would be able to contact Leica direct about it, or should I ask the dealer that I sent it through?

Wouldn't be a problem but the M8 is my ONLY digital camera (unless you count an iPhone).

Well, I've had a reply from Leica, below.

Thank you for your inquiry about the repair of your Leica M8.

We are sorry to have to learn that your camera was not in good working condition. The repair has been completed in the meantime and the camera has been shipped today. Looking at our workshop receipt, I can see that the sensor has been repaired, not replaced.

All the best !

Can't help but feel that as the sensor wasn't replaced that another red-line will pop up sometime in the future. Have I bought a lemon :-(
