Portobello Posted January 20, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted January 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) So I took my X1 on a Death Valley hike last weekend. Such a wonderful camera to take on a hike. Had it around my neck the whole time and sometimes forgot it was there. Â Anyway, I had learned that F8 is usually the sharpest point of the lens. So I said to myself, "Great! I'll shoot everything at F8." Let me tell you, everything is really, really sharp! However, because everything is in focus things tend to lose scale because it tends to all be on the same plane. Â Take a look here: Â Untitled | Flickr - Photo Sharing! Untitled | Flickr - Photo Sharing! Â I am very happy with these shots but the size and depth of everything seems to be lost. The only thing saving scale somewhat are the 2 hikers I went with. Â Any tips on optimal aperture for these kinds of shots?

h00ligan Posted January 20, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted January 20, 2011 I don't really think you lost scale IMO. I like the shots. I shoot landscaped between 5.6 and 8.0 but closer to the former at sunset. I actually believe the x1 is sharpest a touch below 8 ...at least that's my experience with my copy. JeTexas Posted January 20, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted January 20, 2011 Great shots, Portobello. Personally, I like the hyperfocal effect you got. Â It's digital. There's nothing that says you can't take the same photo 10 times, flipping the fstop each time to experiment with what you like.
Portobello Posted January 20, 2011 Author Share #4 Â Posted January 20, 2011 Thanks for the kind comments. I think I will try to experiment next time with something higher than F8 and see what I get. I've never shot something so big in scale so I'm trying to learn how to capture the "epicness" of a given area. Â I'm beginning to think it's this area that made it hard to photograph. At the Golden Canyon in Death Valley, everything is large in scale. You know what the say... if everything is bold nothing is bold.
phancj Posted January 20, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted January 20, 2011 I have in my experience with the X1 found f/5.6-f/8 optimal. Come to think of it more likely F/8 where its sharp, sharp. Â You got some fantastic landscape shots there! Â CJ
jsrockit Posted January 20, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted January 20, 2011 I actually think they look great and I see plenty of depth. I prefer everything to be in focus on these type of photos.
