LeicaMSeattle Posted January 18, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone here experienced this phenomena when the camera is powered up with the ON/OFF switch, the exposure display displays "Zero" when there is obvious plenty of capacity on the card. The message "Memory Card Locked" is displayed and the camera basically refuses to work until the camera is powered off, the bottom is removed, the card is ejected and reinserted. pop Posted January 18, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 18, 2011 The obvious thing to check would be the locking slider on the edge of the card. If you are in the habit of copying and emptying your card in the computer, either emptying the garbage can or reformatting the card might help. Erm, Jaap, are you quite sure that cleaning electric contacts in an electronic device like a digital camera with a liquid is the best of ideas? One way to help keep the contacts clean is to avoid touching the contacts with your fingers, and also to keep cards in their little plastic cases when not in use. Ex-M8, downloaded to LR, backed up and removed from PC. Replaced carefully in M8 where it reported SD card is locked. It isn't. Removed, replaced, same report. Tried in M9; no problem reformatting it, trial shot, all OK. Replaced in M8, repeat of first report. It is a Sandisk Xtreme 2gb. Tried another card in M8; all OK. So will bin the errant card as it may have an incipient fault and might let me down in another camera one day. I don't see how cleaning the contacts will help since it works normally in another body. jaapv Posted January 19, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 19, 2011 Cards are not only finicky mechanically, there can be electronic mismanagement as well. Today I learnt to simulate the " no SD Card" error. I used a 16 Gb Sandisk card from my M9 to transfer Windows XP to my Mac. Deleted everything from the card and put the VMware file onto it. After use I deleted the file from the card and put it into the M9 to reformat. That caused a " No SD Card" message. In the computer the card turned out to register as 7 Gb. I then formatted it to FAT and suddenly all was well. So if the file system on the card gets damaged somehow (usually by deleting files) the M9 will not see it at all.
