d-lux 4 or 5

It just reminds me of when my Son went through his "camouflage" phase. olive-green or khaki everything, t-shirts, bags, combat pants, even duvet and bedding, scrim nets in his bedroom, etc.

I couldn't find him for 8 months...

Bill

For someone in the USA, maybe in memory of the dearly departed dollars invested in the camera :D

Green is not available outside the U.S.? A green camera costs more than a black one? If so, why? A special coating or plating? If so, what kind.

It's not an unreasonable question. It is unreasonable to call another member a jerk.

Regards,

Bill

his 'question' was not a question, but a statement leading people to wonder 'why would someone want a green camera?' as if it were a crazy idea.... If it is a dumb idea, why does canon (among others) make multiple color options on their models? whats wrong with a little variety? why 'shouldnt' i want a green camera is a better question.. you can sit on your high horse and judge me - but we all know his comment was derrogatory, and i responded as such..

No, that's just your interpretation of his question. I don't know the gentleman but I didn't take his question to have the subtext that you suggest but to reasonably imply that 'If the camera is green then you're likely to stand out, which won't help you to blend in to your surroundings while street shooting'.

... you can sit on your high horse and judge me - ..

No one's judging you as far as I can see. You openly insulted a member and Bill quite rightly called you on it.

I, for one, don't know that so we don't "all know" that. I think you've read too much into the question.

Pete.

Why do we stuck on such unimportant matters?

Leica made a Safari Green D-Lux 4. Their advertising extolled its virtues. Now, with all the colors so many Japanese cameras are available in, it's reasonable to wonder if there's not a D-Lux 5 Safari version coming, with all the features and benefits of its precedent.

I'm happy with my black D-Lux 4; if I were buying today, I'd buy a black D-Lux 5 over any D-Lux 4. But I'm not you; your tastes may differ; I'm not about to say you're a subversive jerk if your tastes don't agree with mine.

Currently at Amazon, new D-Liux4's are priced at $969-999, while D-Lux5's are at $799. Since the D-Lux5 also includes Lightroom 3 software, while the D-Luux4 doesn't, this further exaggerates the price difference. Are there any logical reasons (camera features, performance, reliability) to expalin this kind of price difference favoring a previous, discontinued model?

None to my mind.

The only "advantage" to the D-Lux 4 is that the manual distance settings can be adjusted to read in either feet or meters. The D-Lux 5 is meters only.

Does Amazon have stock of both, or are the prices on one set by outside retailers?

At those prices, the advantage goes even more strongly to the D-Lux 5.

When the D-Lux 3 was introduced, it had more features than the D-Lux 2 it replaced, but a lower list price. I don't know what the D-Lux 4 cost at its introduction, but maybe the D-Lux 5 has been priced lower.

Sorry for the stab at humor . . . "greenbacks" are slang for US dollars, hence the poor attempt at punning.

This is exactly why started this thread.. I was thinking the 4 must be better because of the price discrepancy.. now I know that prices be darned, the 5 is better

The DLux4 is still the better camera for fine detailed subjects like landscapes.

If you look at the test images of the LX3 and LX5 on the DPreview test pages and then select the sections of hair or feathers you can see the difference / smearing.

The Dlux5/LX5 seems below par when dealing with hair or foliage and yet appears crisp when taking buildings etc.

Yes , less noise , better build , longer focal length but when the basic IQ falls below that of its predecessor you have to be disappointed.

My LX5 is out of the bag for my next trip , welcome back my trusty DLux4.
